The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade took place on November 27, 1924. Macy’s says the inaugural march began in Harlem, included costumed employees and animals from the Central Park Zoo, and ended at its flagship store on 34th Street. The event welcomed Santa and marked the unveiling of Macy’s holiday windows.
What the first parade was like
In Macy’s account, colleagues gathered at 145th Street in Harlem on Thanksgiving morning and marched downtown to the company’s flagship store on 34th Street. They wore costumes and were accompanied by animals from the Central Park Zoo. Macy’s organized the event to welcome Santa and unveil its holiday windows. Macy’s corporate history dates the first parade to 1924; its history-book listing gives the specific date and route.
Macy’s says 10,000 people watched the first parade. That is the company’s reported figure, not an independently verified attendance count in the available records.
How the parade changed
1927: character balloons arrive
Giant character balloons became part of the celebration in 1927, according to a 1998 New York City Mayor’s Office release. A 2011 NYC Office of Emergency Management newsletter identifies Felix the Cat as the first character balloon.

Wartime exceptions
The 1998 Mayor’s Office release says the parade took place each year from 1924 except for three years during World War II. It does not identify which years, so the specific dates cannot be established from that source.

From a store-centered march to a familiar tradition
The inaugural event was a march of Macy’s colleagues and zoo animals, organized around Santa’s arrival and the holiday-window unveiling. The introduction of character balloons three years later added a feature that would become strongly associated with the parade. These milestones establish part of the tradition’s evolution, but do not amount to a complete year-by-year history.
Macy’s also lists Let’s Have a Parade: Celebrating 100 Macy’s Parades by Kim Keller, a history book published in 2026. Its listing describes coverage of parade milestones, balloons, performances, and history.
