What Planet Is World of Warcraft Based On?

World of Warcraft is set on Azeroth, the name Blizzard gives to the game's world. The same name also refers to a continent in the Eastern Kingdoms, so context matters.

World of Warcraft is set on Azeroth. Blizzard uses that name for the game’s world, and it also uses the same name for one continent within that world, which is the source of most of the confusion around the question.

Azeroth is the world, not just a continent

The setting of World of Warcraft is Azeroth. Blizzard’s official manual for World of Warcraft Classic states that Azeroth is “both the name of the world of Warcraft, and the name of one of the three continents that comprise the Eastern Kingdoms, the landmass opposite of Kalimdor on the world map.” When someone asks what planet the game takes place on, the answer is the world that the manual names first: Azeroth.

Why the name causes confusion

Players often meet “Azeroth” as a region name long before they learn it refers to the whole world. The same word is used for both, so the meaning depends on context. The table below separates the two uses.

Use of the name What it refers to Example of how it appears
Azeroth (the world) The entire planet-scale setting of the Warcraft story and of World of Warcraft Blizzard’s news describes Azeroth as the world beneath the story of each expansion
Azeroth (the continent) One of the three continents of the Eastern Kingdoms, opposite Kalimdor on the world map Named in the Classic manual as the landmass opposite Kalimdor

In short, a question about the planet refers to the world sense. A question about a place on the map, such as a zone inside the Eastern Kingdoms, may refer to the continent.

Where Azeroth sits in the wider lore

Blizzard’s lore places Azeroth inside a larger cosmic setting rather than treating it as a standalone map. In its official recap of the Dragon Aspects, published in 2022, Blizzard describes the titans as “planet-sized cosmic beings” and says the Dragon Aspects were “charged with protecting Azeroth.” That framing is the clearest official description of Azeroth’s standing: it is a world important enough to be guarded by cosmic-scale beings.

The recap is useful for context, but it does not by itself settle every astronomical detail. If you need the exact way Blizzard describes Azeroth’s place among other worlds, the story material on Blizzard’s official site is the place to check, since the short recap focuses on the Dragon Aspects.

Optional reading on Azeroth’s history

A lore book on the world’s history exists for readers who want more depth. The publisher-hosted sample of World of Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 1 is titled “The Official History of Azeroth!” and carries a 2016 Blizzard copyright. The book is supplementary; you do not need it to answer what planet World of Warcraft is based on. I have not verified its current retail availability or pricing, so check a retailer directly before buying.

Summary of the answer

  • World of Warcraft is set on Azeroth.
  • Azeroth is also the name of one continent in the Eastern Kingdoms, so context decides which sense is meant.
  • Blizzard’s lore treats Azeroth as a world within a larger cosmos, protected by the Dragon Aspects.
