A jigsaw puzzle is a picture cut into interlocking pieces that the solver reassembles to reveal the complete image. Ravensburger, a German puzzle manufacturer, gives the plainest version of the definition: “A jigsaw puzzle is a picture that’s cut into lots of interlocking pieces.” (Ravensburger, “What Is a Jigsaw Puzzle?”)

The task is image reconstruction. Everything else about the category, including its name, its 18th-century beginnings, and its move to cardboard, follows from that single activity.

How a jigsaw differs from other puzzles

Puzzles are often grouped together, but a jigsaw asks something different from the solver than most other types. Ravensburger’s explainer contrasts jigsaws with crosswords, Sudoku, and logic puzzles. The clearest way to separate them is by what the solver actually does.

Puzzle type What the solver does What the finished result is
Jigsaw puzzle Matches cut pieces by shape and by the part of the picture each piece shows A complete picture, assembled from physical pieces
Crossword Answers written clues and fits words into a letter grid A filled grid of words
Sudoku Places numbers into a grid under row, column, and box rules A completed number grid
Logic puzzle Deduces answers from a set of stated constraints A solved set of conclusions

The feature that defines a jigsaw is that the pieces of a depicted image must be fitted together to form a whole. A puzzle with a picture that is not cut and reassembled, or with no physical pieces, falls outside the category.

Where the name “jigsaw” comes from

The word refers to the saws used to cut the intricate piece shapes, not to the shape of the pieces or the number of them. Europeana, a cultural heritage platform, says the association with those saws emerged around 1880, and that the term “jigsaw puzzle” is generally believed to date to the early 1900s (Europeana, “The history of jigsaw puzzles”). Ravensburger reports that the phrase had appeared in print by 1906 (Ravensburger, “The History of the Jigsaw Puzzle”). The name therefore came into use gradually, and no single first use is firmly established.

Origins in 18th-century Britain

The commonly told origin points to Britain in the 1760s. John Spilsbury, an English mapmaker, mounted a map on wood and cut along the boundaries between countries. These “dissected maps” were teaching tools for geography. The Strong National Museum of Play places the origin around 1760, and Europeana says Spilsbury is often credited with the first commercial jigsaw puzzles in the 1760s (The Strong National Museum of Play, “Jigsaw Puzzle”). Because these dates are approximate, “commonly credited” is the accurate phrasing for Spilsbury.

Those early puzzles did not look like modern ones. Ravensburger describes the pieces as fitting snugly against each other without interlocking, so a solver relied on the boundary lines of the map rather than on tabs and blanks. The shapes that define today’s puzzles came later.

From maps to pictures to mass production

Over time, subjects moved beyond maps to scenes and general pictures, and mechanical cutting made more intricate, interlocking shapes practical. The Strong museum identifies mass-produced, die-cut cardboard puzzles as a major part of the puzzle’s popular heyday. Die-cutting let a single prepared tool stamp out many identical pieces, and the Strong museum and Ravensburger’s company history both describe cardboard replacing wood for affordability and production reasons. Ravensburger dates this shift to the 1930s, when cardboard puzzles could be produced at much larger scale and sold at lower cost.

Materials and how modern puzzles are made

Mass-market jigsaw puzzles are most often cardboard: a printed image is glued or attached to a sturdy board, then cut with a die. Wooden puzzles remain a premium alternative. Methods and materials vary between manufacturers, so the general process should not be read as identical for every product.

Ravensburger states that its own puzzles use proprietary cardboard and cutting dies and are made in Germany and the Czech Republic (Ravensburger, “140 Years of Family & Play”). Those are the company’s own claims about its production and do not describe the whole category.

What the evidence does not establish

No dated, attributable current market-size or participation figure for jigsaw puzzles is available from these sources, so this article does not offer one. The historical counts and dates above are tied to the years and sources named, and should not be read as contemporary market statistics.

A simple way to start

For a reader who wants to see the definition in practice, the most direct entry point is a cardboard jigsaw with a picture that suits the solver’s age. Sort the edge pieces first, then group pieces by colour and image area. A single mass-market cardboard puzzle is enough to demonstrate everything described above: a printed picture, die-cut interlocking pieces, and a completed image at the end.
