Michelle Carter was released from jail on January 23, 2020, after serving most of her 15-month sentence. Officials said at the time that her probation was scheduled to end on August 1, 2022. The available reporting and court records do not establish where she lives or what she does today. Conrad Roy died in July 2014, so more than 12 years—not 11—have passed.

Is Michelle Carter still in prison?

No. Carter left the Bristol County House of Correction on January 23, 2020. The Associated Press reported that she earned time off her 15-month jail sentence for good behavior. Officials said her probation was scheduled to end August 1, 2022; the contemporaneous reports establish that scheduled date, but do not independently confirm that probation was completed.

What is known about her life now?

The reliable records and release reports cited here do not confirm Carter’s current residence, occupation, relationship status, public activity, or day-to-day life. That absence of verified information does not establish that she has disappeared, lives in a particular town, or follows a particular lifestyle. Claims about her whereabouts based on unattributed social posts or paparazzi items should not be treated as confirmed facts.

Why was Michelle Carter convicted?

Roy died from carbon monoxide poisoning in his truck in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, in July 2014. His body was found on July 13, the day after his death, according to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

In June 2017, after a judge-only trial, Carter was convicted of involuntary manslaughter as a youthful offender. In February 2019, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court affirmed the conviction, finding the trial evidence sufficient and rejecting Carter’s appellate arguments, including her First Amendment claim. The court’s ruling was an appellate decision on the trial conviction—not a finding about Carter’s present circumstances.

“We conclude that the evidence was sufficient to support the judge’s finding of proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant committed involuntary manslaughter as a youthful offender, and that the other legal issues presented by the defendant, including her First Amendment claim, lack merit.”

How did the case reach the conviction?

  • July 2014: Conrad Roy died in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.
  • 2016: The Supreme Judicial Court considered whether grand-jury evidence established probable cause to proceed on a youthful-offender involuntary manslaughter indictment. This was not the trial verdict.
  • June 2017: Carter was convicted after a judge-only trial.
  • February 2019: The state’s highest court affirmed the conviction.
  • January 23, 2020: Carter was released from jail.

The 2016 ruling addressed probable cause, a threshold for proceeding with the case. It should not be confused with the later trial finding of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. See the 2016 Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision and the 2019 decision.
