Why did Taylor Swift write “marjorie”?
Swift identified the song’s subject in a note accompanying evermore. As reproduced by The Independent, she described it as: “One starring my grandmother, Marjorie, who still visits me sometimes… if only in my dreams.” That note directly connects the song to Finlay and to Swift’s feeling of continued closeness after her grandmother’s death.
“marjorie” is track 13 on evermore. The Los Angeles Times describes it as an homage to Finlay and reports that Finlay died in 2003. The Los Angeles Times’ coverage of the album also notes a striking part of the recording: Finlay’s own voice appears among the background vocals.

What do the lyrics of “marjorie” mean?
The song is best understood as Swift remembering her grandmother through the counsel and ordinary family moments she associates with her. Its reflections also carry regret: the speaker recognizes that there were questions she did not ask and details she did not preserve before those opportunities disappeared. This is a reading of the song’s themes, not a definitive, line-by-line explanation supplied by Swift.
That tension gives the song its emotional shape. Memory keeps Finlay vivid, while the speaker knows that remembering is not the same as having more time with her. The recurring sense that a person remains alive in memory holds those feelings together. By the end, grief and presence coexist: death is real, but the relationship still has a place in the speaker’s inner life. ELLE’s discussion of the song likewise connects its meaning to remembrance and Finlay’s background vocals. Read ELLE’s explanation of “marjorie”.

Why Finlay’s voice matters in the recording
Finlay’s background vocals make the tribute more than a song about remembered words. Her voice is part of the recording itself, creating a direct connection between the person Swift is remembering and the sound of the song. The Los Angeles Times and ELLE report this vocal detail; it is not necessary to treat it as a hidden message or to claim that Swift has offered a separate official explanation for every lyric.
