Saikat Majumdar’s novel The Middle Finger follows Megha, a poet and writing lecturer whose working life moves between New Jersey and Delhi. It uses her position to test how mentorship, class, cultural privilege and artistic compromise operate inside universities. Simon & Schuster lists S&S India as the publisher and February 1, 2022 as the publication date, so the book is a 2022 publication, not a new release as of October 2026.
What happens in the novel
The publisher’s description presents Megha as a young writing lecturer in New Jersey who is trying to finish her thesis and secure full-time employment while gaining an underground following as a poet. Her professor urges her to relocate to Delhi to teach at a new university. There she finds herself among students from wealthy and influential families, and a new friend asks for her support in a way that disrupts both her work and her personal boundaries.

The author frames the book as a story about a poet working through mentorship and belonging across geographic and social lines. The move from a precarious position in the United States to an elite institution in India is the structure on which the rest of the novel depends.
The questions the novel presses
The book’s concerns cluster into four lines of inquiry. None of them is resolved by a neat rule, and the novel is better read as a sequence of pressures than as a case with a verdict.
#1 Best Overall
Mentorship and the teacher-student line
The author’s official description asks: “What is the meaning of the teacher-student relationship, and what are the ethical boundaries in terms of friendship and personal intimacy?” The novel keeps that question open. Its test case is a friendship that begins as a request for help, which shows how quickly an academic role can slide into a personal obligation.
Privilege that shifts with context
Commentary on the book, including a Hindustan Times interview coverage, describes Megha as racialized in the United States and relatively privileged in India. That description resists a simple insider-outsider reading. The same character can be marginal in one setting and advantaged in another, and her sense of belonging depends on which setting she is in.
Rank #2
Precarity inside an elite institution
The author places Megha at a wealthy Delhi university and ties the story to class. Her struggles with a thesis and with finding stable work in New Jersey sit alongside the class stakes of teaching students whose families hold influence. The novel makes employment insecurity and institutional privilege part of the same story rather than treating them as separate issues.
Art, intimacy and compromise
The publisher emphasizes creative compromise and the pressure on poets to produce “snarky and snappy” work. These are the publisher’s framing terms rather than a claim that every reader will agree on one interpretation. The book connects that pressure to the ethical questions about intimacy and responsibility in teaching, so that a poet’s choices about what to make are treated as moral choices too.

The title’s mythic frame
A Hindustan Times review links the title to Drona and Eklavya, the episode in which a teacher asks a pupil for his thumb. As the review presents the allusion, the title points to what teachers can demand from students and the loyalty or sacrifice that such demands can exact. Readers who know the story will see the novel’s questions about mentorship as older than the campus setting.

Saloni Sharma, Scroll.in
Sharma places the novel within debates about literature and pedagogy and notes the intimacy between teacher and taught. She reads the book as an affirmation of liberal arts education and points to the way meanings move between written and performed forms.
Hindustan Times
The Hindustan Times review focuses on Megha’s life as a poet and teacher, on her academic and artistic relationships, and on the book’s exploration of mentorship and privilege.
Best Value
Los Angeles Review of Books
The reviewer identifies teacher-student power and harassment as political undercurrents in the novel. That is the reviewer’s interpretation, and it is the most pointed of the three readings in its emphasis on abuse of authority.

Who will get the most from it
The novel suits readers interested in campus fiction, in Indian English novels about academic life, and in debates over mentorship and power between teachers and students. Readers who want a plot that settles its ethical question should expect something more open-ended: the book sets the questions out through Megha’s choices and leaves their weight to the reader.
