The Simpsons’ Season 36 Finale “Estranger Things” Kills Off Marge, but Only in a Future Flash-Forward

The Season 36 finale "Estranger Things" shows Marge Simpson dead in a flash-forward. Executive producer Matt Selman says it is one speculative future episode, not a permanent change to the series.

In the Season 36 finale, “Estranger Things,” which aired May 18, 2025, The Simpsons shows Marge Simpson dead. The death happens inside a flash-forward to a possible future, not in the show’s present-day story. The episode is a dramatic what-if, and the show’s executive producer has said so directly.

What the episode shows

The flash-forward follows a future in which Bart and Lisa have become estranged after growing apart. Homer is a widower. Marge has left a video message urging her two older children to support each other and to look after their father. The episode closes by showing Marge in heaven with Ringo Starr.

The scenario is built around three beats, and each one matters for how the death should be read:

  • The estrangement: Bart and Lisa, the two older Simpson children, are no longer close.
  • The video: Marge’s recorded message is the device that pushes the siblings back toward each other and toward caring for Homer.
  • The epilogue: Marge’s afterlife with Ringo Starr is the final image, which frames the death as the end of this particular future rather than an event in the regular series.

Why this is not a permanent exit from the series

The headline’s phrase “kills off” overstates what the episode establishes. Marge is dead in the future the episode depicts. The show’s ongoing present-day continuity is a separate matter, and the episode does not change it.

Executive producer Matt Selman addressed the reaction in a statement to Variety, which TVLine quoted in a report dated June 26, 2025. The full statement, as TVLine printed it, reads:

“The Simpsons doesn’t even have canon. Obviously since the The Simpsons’ future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time. Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago.”

Two points in that statement carry the argument. First, Selman rejects the idea that the show’s future-set episodes form a fixed, interconnected timeline. Second, he limits Marge’s death to one episode. TVLine also reported that the show has used several flash-forward stories before and that those scenarios have not affected the wider storyline. The Guardian likewise describes the future episodes as alternate versions rather than links in one continuous chain.

Selman’s comments date from June 2025. Readers looking at later episodes or newer official statements should check those directly, since this article does not cover them.

Two readings of the same episode

The episode supports two different claims, and they should not be merged. The table separates what the finale depicts from what the producer has said about the series’ continuity.

Question Inside the “Estranger Things” flash-forward In the ongoing series, per the producer’s statement
Is Marge dead? Yes. The episode shows her dead and gives her an afterlife epilogue. Selman says Marge is dead only in this one future episode and that she will probably never be dead again.
Is Homer a widower? Yes, in this future. Not stated. The statement does not address Homer’s status outside the flash-forward.
Are Bart and Lisa estranged? Yes, until Marge’s video reunites them in part. Not stated. No present-day change to their relationship is reported.
Does the episode change the series’ fixed continuity? Not applicable. The future is presented as one possibility. No. Selman says the future episodes are speculative and that the show does not have canon.

How to read the headline

Headlines such as “Did ‘The Simpsons’ Really Kill Marge?” and “Did The Simpsons really just kill off a major character?” are asking a fair question, but the answer depends on which timeline is meant. Use these guidelines when you write about or discuss the episode:

  • Say that Marge dies in the finale’s flash-forward, not that she leaves the series.
  • Name the episode and its air date, May 18, 2025, so the reference is unambiguous.
  • Attribute the continuity point to Selman’s June 2025 statement rather than presenting it as a network or studio policy.
  • Avoid claims about audience reaction unless a named source publishes figures. None are established here.

What fans can reasonably conclude

The finale gives viewers a dramatic, emotionally loaded picture of a family without Marge, but it does not rewrite the family’s present. The episode works as a story about grief and a possible future, and the producer has been clear that the story is not a permanent character exit. Anyone who wants the most current word on Marge’s status should look at the show’s later episodes and at official statements made after June 2025.

For a wider view of how The Simpsons has used flash-forwards, see the show’s own episode listings on its official channels, which record each future-set story as a separate episode.

Fans who want to revisit the episode itself should check the streaming platform or broadcaster that carries The Simpsons in their region, because availability varies by country.

In short, Marge’s death in “Estranger Things” is real inside the episode’s future, and it is a one-off in the sense that the producer has tied it to that single episode.
