Keira Knightley anchors Netflix’s adaptation of Ruth Ware’s yacht mystery, though screenplay problems keep its suspense from holding together.

The Woman in Cabin 10 has a strong setup: journalist Lo Blacklock boards a billionaire’s superyacht and becomes entangled in a missing-passenger mystery. Keira Knightley gives the film a persuasive center, but the screenplay does not make the mystery’s logic feel equally secure. The result is a glossy, watchable thriller that struggles to turn its premise into sustained suspense.

What is The Woman in Cabin 10 about?

Netflix’s film follows journalist Lo Blacklock on the maiden voyage of a billionaire’s new superyacht, where the disappearance of a passenger drives the mystery. Netflix classifies it as an ominous psychological mystery and thriller. Netflix’s title page lists Keira Knightley, Guy Pearce and Hannah Waddingham among the cast; Netflix Tudum’s film guide identifies Lo and the voyage premise.

That enclosed setting gives the story a natural source of pressure: a passenger may be missing, yet the people aboard have their own reasons to doubt what Lo says she saw. The central challenge is sustaining that uncertainty without making the mystery’s turns feel arbitrary.

Does Keira Knightley carry the film?

Knightley supplies the clearest reason to stay with the story. As Lo, she gives the journalist’s alarm and isolation a human focus, helping the film hold together when the screenplay’s choices make the mystery less convincing. Her performance can make Lo’s predicament compelling even when the plot does not fully earn its shifts in tension.

That distinction matters: a strong lead performance is not the same as a well-built mystery. One critic quoted on Rotten Tomatoes’ film page faults the script’s coherence while praising Knightley’s effort. That is an individual critical judgment, not evidence of a universal verdict, but it captures the film’s central imbalance.

Where does the thriller lose its footing?

The yacht and missing-passenger premise promise a compact, pressure-filled mystery. The story is most effective when it keeps attention on Lo’s limited position among the passengers and on the question of whether her account will be believed. It is less persuasive when the screenplay’s logic weakens the connection between the mystery and the character decisions meant to advance it. Once those links become difficult to trust, suspense loses force: uncertainty works best when viewers can follow the rules of the puzzle, even if they cannot yet solve it.

Simon Stone directed the film and co-wrote it with Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, according to Netflix Tudum. The film’s main shortcoming is therefore not its basic premise or its lead, but the screenplay’s ability to make its mystery feel coherent enough to sustain that premise.

Is the film based on a book?

Yes. The Woman in Cabin 10 adapts Ruth Ware’s novel of the same name, as Netflix Tudum notes. If the film leaves you wanting more time with the premise, the novel is the direct next step. The available evidence does not establish detailed scene-by-scene differences, so a firm claim that one version handles particular plot points better would go beyond what can be supported here.

Should you watch it or read the book?

Choose the film if you are primarily interested in Knightley and a yacht-set screen thriller. Choose Ware’s novel if you want to explore the original story in book form. For a reader considering what to read afterward, the Associated Press describes Ware’s The Woman in Suite 11 as a sequel of sorts and says familiarity with the earlier story is useful; see the AP’s coverage.

The Woman in Cabin 10 is worth considering as a star-centered, atmospheric thriller, but not as a mystery whose screenplay consistently matches its premise. Knightley keeps it afloat; the writing keeps it from sailing as smoothly as it should.
