In her December 2024 farewell to Bapsi Sidhwa, novelist Sehba Sarwar remembers more than a celebrated Pakistani writer: she recalls a friend and mentor whose warmth, encouragement and laughter shaped her years in Houston. Sarwar’s tribute is personal testimony, not a full biography or survey of Sidhwa’s work.

What Sarwar’s farewell remembers

Scroll.in published Sarwar’s remembrance on December 29, 2024. Sarwar writes from personal acquaintance, recalling that she met Sidhwa at a dinner hosted by educator and writer Marv Hoffman and later encountered her at home and at community events in Houston. She also remembers Sidhwa’s support and her presence in the city’s cultural life.

Sarwar says she had not seen Sidhwa for almost a decade after leaving Houston for Los Angeles. That interval is Sarwar’s own account of their contact; it does not diminish the gratitude she expresses for the encouragement Sidhwa had given her.

A writer and mentor in Houston’s literary community

Sarwar presents Sidhwa as a Pakistani writer in English whose work and mentorship mattered to Pakistani literature, particularly to women writers. The tribute’s focus is the effect Sidhwa had on people around her as well as the significance of her writing: an established author who made room for other writers and remained connected to a broader South Asian literary community.

Cracking India: A Novel
  • Used Book in Good Condition

One named work is Cracking India. Sarwar connects the novel to Deepa Mehta’s film Earth, which brings the violence and grief of the 1947 Partition to the screen. The remembrance invokes the book and film as part of Sidhwa’s literary legacy rather than attempting a comparative assessment of her novels.

The 2014 appreciation behind the farewell

The 2024 article also republishes Sarwar’s earlier appreciation, “Bapsi Sidhwa: A gift to Houston,” first published in the Houston Chronicle on December 5, 2014, according to Sapan News. That section offers a decade-old snapshot of Sidhwa’s place in Houston and includes recollections from people who knew or worked with her. Those remarks belong to their original moment; they should not be read as present-day descriptions of Sidhwa’s circumstances.

The distinction gives the farewell its shape: Sarwar’s 2014 appreciation records a community’s view of Sidhwa at that time, while the 2024 framing looks back after her death. In the later remembrance, the personal bond and the impression Sidhwa left on others remain central.

Why the final image is laughter

Scroll.in reports that Sidhwa died on December 25, 2024, aged 86. Sarwar closes not with a catalogue of honors, but with a memory shared by those who knew her: “And those who knew her, we will remember her laughter.” The line makes the tribute’s emotional point—her legacy lives in books and influence, but also in the vivid presence remembered by friends and fellow writers.
