Season 3 ends with the central trio split apart: Geralt is badly wounded and sets out to find Ciri, Ciri escapes the desert and joins the Rats, and Yennefer stays behind to help the surviving sorceresses. The season also reveals that Vilgefortz has been orchestrating the hunt for Ciri and is aligned with Nilfgaard.
Season 4 has already been released, so this is a catch-up guide rather than a preview of the series’ return. Netflix’s Australian series listing includes an official “Seasons 1-3 Recap: The Witcher” video; video availability may vary by region.
Why is everyone hunting Ciri?
Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer spend part of the season moving together as a makeshift family, trying to keep Ciri safe while powerful factions pursue her. Rience, the fire mage, tracks Ciri on orders from Lydia, who answers to a mysterious figure she calls “My Lord.”
The hidden figure is Vilgefortz. Clues connect him to Teryn, a missing half-elven novice, and a stolen book associated with time travel and portals. Geralt and Yennefer piece together his role in the pursuit. Netflix’s Season 3 ending explainer identifies Vilgefortz as working with Nilfgaard and directing Lydia and Rience.

What happened at Thanedd?
The Conclave of Mages becomes the setting for a coup. Redanian political maneuvering collides with Vilgefortz’s betrayal, and the violence spreads to Aretuza. Tissaia discovers that Vilgefortz is working with Nilfgaard. The battle leaves the mage community fractured and costs lives, destroying the fragile political order the mages had maintained.
How does Geralt’s fight with Vilgefortz end?
After Rience is killed, Geralt confronts Vilgefortz. Vilgefortz overwhelms him and leaves him gravely injured. Geralt had tried to stay outside the competing political alliances, but the confrontation makes neutrality untenable: he chooses to oppose Nilfgaard and search for Ciri. As TheWrap’s October 30, 2025 recap notes, the season closes with that search as Geralt’s priority.

Where does Ciri end up?
During the upheaval, Ciri escapes through a portal and lands alone in a desert. She survives the ordeal, but her escape does not bring her back to Geralt or Yennefer. Nilfgaardian bounty hunters capture her; a group of young outlaws known as the Rats free her, and she joins them.
The Rats become a new group around Ciri, but Season 3 leaves the consequences of that choice unresolved. She is no longer traveling with the people who raised and protected her, and the season ends without showing what this new allegiance will mean.

Why does Yennefer stay behind?
Yennefer does not leave with Geralt or Ciri. After the assault on Aretuza, she returns to the surviving mages, intending to rally the sorceresses against Vilgefortz. Her decision leaves the trio separated: Geralt searches for Ciri, Ciri is with the Rats, and Yennefer is with the mage survivors.

- Vilgefortz is the principal betrayer. He directs the pursuit of Ciri and is allied with Nilfgaard.
- Thanedd changes the balance of power. The coup exposes Vilgefortz and shatters the mage community.
- Geralt has chosen a cause. Gravely injured, he sets out to find Ciri and oppose Nilfgaard.
- Ciri has a new circle. The Rats rescue her from bounty hunters, and she joins them.
- The family is split. Yennefer stays with the surviving sorceresses while Geralt and Ciri pursue separate paths.
There is also a cast change to keep in mind: Henry Cavill played Geralt through Season 3, and Liam Hemsworth takes over the role in Season 4. This is a change of actor, not a change to Geralt’s identity in the story. Netflix’s Australian series listing names Hemsworth, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan among the principal cast and lists four seasons.
