Spoiler warning: this explains the ending of The Front Room, the 2024 A24 film written and directed by Max and Sam Eggers. Yes, Belinda survives. Brandy is the actor who plays Belinda, so the question people usually mean by “Does Brandy survive?” is really about Belinda, the pregnant character at the centre of the story. The film ends with her alive and trying to move forward, but it leaves the way she got there deeply uncomfortable.
The setup the ending depends on
A24’s official synopsis centres on Belinda, newly pregnant, after her mother-in-law, Solange, moves in and begins to threaten her relationship with the child. The film’s cast is Brandy, Andrew Burnap, Neal Huff and Kathryn Hunter. Everything in the final act turns on how the film first presents Solange’s death and then changes that picture.
The reveal: from peaceful death to smothering
For a time, the film presents Solange’s death as peaceful. It then reveals that Belinda smothered her with a pillow. That single reversal is the core of the ending. Viewers who took the first presentation at face value have to reassess what they saw, and the film’s later scenes are no longer a story about a woman being harmed by a difficult relative but about a woman who chose to end that threat herself.
What the closing job-interview sequence signals
The final sequence shows Belinda at a job interview. It signals that she is alive and attempting to build a life beyond the house and the pregnancy she was fighting to protect. It does not settle the moral question, but it shows the film shifting from crisis to a future that is at least possible.

The inheritance
According to CinemaBlend’s coverage of the ending, Belinda and her husband Norman inherit Solange’s wealth. The film does not present this as a neat reward. The money arrives because of the killing, and that link is what keeps the closing from reading as a simple happy ending.
How Brandy reads Belinda’s outcome
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Brandy described the ending as a sense of liberation and victory for the character:

“Well, I think in the end, without giving so much away, I think after going through such a journey with Belinda, just finding her way, finding her integrity, finding her worth her value, fighting for her life, fighting for her family, fighting for her baby, you get a sense of liberation for her. You get a sense of victory for her in the end. And, I hope that people take away that from her character.”
This is Brandy’s interpretation of her character, not an objective resolution of the film’s moral tension. It explains how the performance was built around Belinda’s struggle to protect herself, her family and her child. It does not erase the fact that the victory was won by killing someone.

Why the ending stays morally uneasy
- Liberation: Belinda is free of the threat Solange posed, she survives, and the closing suggests a future of work and self-direction.
- Cost: the freedom came from a deliberate smothering that the film first disguised as a peaceful death.
- Benefit: the inheritance means Belinda and Norman gain materially from that act.
Read together, these points explain why the ending can be called a victory in Belinda’s own struggle while still leaving the audience uneasy about what that victory required.

A Yahoo search-result excerpt reports that the film is based on a short story by Susan Hill, included in her 2016 collection The Travelling Bag and Other Ghostly Stories. The available citation does not establish how closely the film follows that story, so treat the collection as optional background reading rather than a requirement for understanding the film. Current retail availability of the collection is also not confirmed here.
