Its central story is the gap between that brand and Johnson’s later admission that he had used performance-enhancing drugs. Here are five takeaways, with the film’s framing distinguished from what outside reporting says.
1. The Liver King was a character as well as a person
Brian Johnson presented himself online as the Liver King: a muscular advocate of “ancestral living” built around whole foods, outdoor activity, hard training and rejecting modern comforts. Raw-meat imagery made the persona instantly recognizable, while social media carried it to an audience and helped connect it to a supplement business. Netflix’s official title page describes the film through that blend of persona, content and commerce.
The documentary is therefore not a neutral guide to diet or exercise. “Ancestral living” is the brand’s language, not proof that its practices are medically validated or right for viewers.
2. The “100% natural” claim mattered to the brand
TIME reported that Johnson repeatedly presented himself as “100% natural” while promoting his physique and business. That claim shaped how viewers could interpret the content: the image suggested that the body and lifestyle on display were attainable without performance-enhancing drugs. The controversy was not simply about a fitness influencer using steroids; it called into question a claim central to the persona’s appeal.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. The 2022 disclosures forced a public reversal
TIME’s May 2025 account says leaked emails and blood-test materials surfaced in November 2022, after which Johnson admitted in a video that he had lied about steroid use. That sequence is TIME’s reporting; it should not be mistaken for independent verification of every leaked document. The important turning point is that the natural-physique claim was followed by a public admission that contradicted it.
4. The business figures show scale—but they need context
TIME reported that the supplement brand had a stated $100 million annual turnover in 2021, and that roughly 25,000 people began buying its liver supplements each month. It also reported leaked correspondence indicating $11,000 per month in spending on steroids and human growth hormone. These are figures in TIME’s account, not audited results established here; turnover is not profit, and none should be read as a current sales figure.

TIME also put Johnson’s audience at 6 million followers in 2021. Netflix Tudum gave a later snapshot—2.3 million Instagram followers and 6.1 million TikTok followers—in its May 19, 2025 article. Those dated counts are not current metrics. Tudum’s article also describes the film’s interviews with Johnson, family members and business partners, placing the personal story alongside the commercial one.
5. The film’s redemption arc is open to challenge
Netflix Tudum quotes director Joe Pearlman describing his curiosity about the person behind the persona: “I wanted to find out more; who he really was and what was really going on.” Pearlman also situates the story in a media environment where someone can reach a huge audience without traditional gatekeeping. The film’s interest in Johnson’s personal story can invite viewers to consider whether the documentary offers a path toward redemption.

TIME’s May 13, 2025 review is more skeptical: it argues that the film does not probe some late revelations sufficiently and questions its redemptive framing. That is the reviewer’s judgment, not a settled account of the filmmakers’ motives. The two perspectives make a useful distinction for viewers: the documentary presents a story about a persona and its consequences, while a review can still ask whether the film scrutinizes that story hard enough.
