Grace Van Patten hopes Lucy is finished with Stephen, but she does not treat the finale as proof that Lucy will never return to him. The actor reads Stephen’s latest betrayal as a possible breaking point—and the ending as hopeful precisely because Lucy’s next choice remains open.
What happens to Lucy and Stephen in the finale?
After leaving Bree and Evan’s wedding with Stephen, Lucy is abandoned by him at a gas station. The final image leaves her alone, confronted once again with the consequences of trusting him. The Los Angeles Times’ finale coverage and TIME’s ending explainer describe the episode’s central turn.
Is Lucy completely done with Stephen?
Van Patten hopes so, but her answer is an interpretation, not a definitive promise about Lucy’s future. Speaking to TheWrap, she described Stephen leaving Lucy again as a potential “final straw.” His behavior is so familiar that Lucy might finally recognize the pattern rather than keep hoping it will change.
Van Patten explained the cycle this way: “People get caught in these vicious cycles and unless you completely are done and cut it off and tell yourself that it’s done, you’re going to continue to go back … she has still not broken that cycle.” That distinction matters: Lucy has experienced another devastating betrayal, but the finale does not show her making a clear, permanent declaration that she is done.

Van Patten also told Teen Vogue, “I think it’s hopeful. I think she might be free. She might have learned her lesson.” “Might” leaves room for both outcomes. Lucy could use the abandonment to break away, or she could remain caught in the same cycle.
Why did Van Patten call Stephen a “supervillain”?
The phrase is a vivid, playful way to describe Stephen’s role in Lucy’s life—not a clinical label. As ComingSoon reported from Van Patten’s interview with Collider, she said of men like Stephen, “Those guys always think they’re winning.” In context, the remark points to the confidence with which Stephen repeats destructive behavior, not to a diagnosis or a claim that he literally sees himself as a villain.
Does the finale give a definitive answer about Lucy’s future?
No. The ending offers a possible opening for Lucy to leave Stephen behind, but it does not confirm that she will. Van Patten’s hope for Lucy is distinct from what the episode establishes: the character is left alone after Stephen abandons her, and viewers must decide whether that moment finally breaks the cycle.
Jackson White, who plays Stephen, offered a sharper formulation in TIME’s finale coverage: “The only way to break the cycle is to walk away.” It captures the choice facing Lucy without resolving what she will do next.

Is there another season to answer the question?
No. Season 3 is the series finale. The Los Angeles Times reported that creator Meaghan Oppenheimer announced the series would not return on the day the finale was released; TheWrap also interviewed Oppenheimer about the final episode. The story therefore ends without a later season to settle Lucy and Stephen’s future.
The Hulu series is based on Carola Lovering’s novel Tell Me Lies. The book is a separate way to explore the story’s source material, though its plot should not be assumed to match every choice made in the television adaptation.
