Showrunner Justin Noble said Rapp’s step back as a series regular gave the writers room to add “not one, but two new main characters”: Gracie Lawrence as Kacey and Mia Rodgers as Taylor. Kacey is the most natural candidate for the audience-facing space Leighton held, but the show never presented her as a replacement, so “replacement” is best read as an editorial comparison rather than a casting decision.
Who replaces Renée Rapp on The Sex Lives of College Girls?
No single actor was cast to take over Leighton. In a November 21, 2024 interview with TheWrap, Noble framed the Season 3 changes as an expansion rather than a swap. Rapp was stepping down as a series regular, and the writers used that opening to bring in two characters at once.
Calling Kacey the replacement is a reasonable reading of where she sits in the ensemble, since she arrives as Leighton departs and fills the group space Leighton vacated. But that is the article’s analysis. The reporting cited here does not describe Kacey as a direct substitute, and Taylor was added in the same casting expansion, so any one-for-one comparison would have to account for both.
Why did Leighton leave?
Leighton was one of the four original roommates and marked Rapp’s television debut. Her exit was a character decision, not a recast of the role. Noble described her as someone who figured out what she wanted from college early, and her departure follows from that. In his words:

- 2026 Adult magazine
“She makes this sweet choice that is not all roses, where she has to say goodbye to people she loves, but she knows it’s the only thing she can do for her own best future.”
TheWrap described the send-off as “a joyful send-off.” That phrase is the outlet’s own description, not a direct quote from Noble.

Accounts differ on how many episodes Leighton appears in. TheWrap places her exit in episode two, while ABC Audio reports three episodes. This article does not give a count, because the sources do not agree on one.
Who is Kacey?
Gracie Lawrence plays Kacey, one of the two main characters added for Season 3. Noble said the character’s concept began as a “girly girl,” and the cited interview places her relationships with Kimberly and Whitney at the center of how she fits into the group.

Who is Taylor?
Mia Rodgers plays Taylor, the second new main character. Noble described her as a younger student paired with Bela, conceived with a higher social status and a sharp British wit. Her role is to challenge Bela’s assumptions about status. Noble was direct about the design logic:
“I wanted Taylor to be the inverse of what Leighton was.”
How the new characters compare with Leighton
| Axis | Leighton Murray (Renée Rapp) | Kacey (Gracie Lawrence) | Taylor (Mia Rodgers) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Season 3 status | Departing original roommate; no longer a series regular | New main character | New main character, added alongside Kacey |
| Character basis (Noble, November 21, 2024 interview) | Made an early, self-directed choice about her future and leaves | Concept began as a “girly girl”; relationships with Kimberly and Whitney | Younger student paired with Bela; higher social status and British wit; designed as the inverse of Leighton |
| Relationship to the “replacement” question | The character being written out | Closest candidate for the audience-facing space Leighton left; not presented by the showrunner as a direct replacement | Added in the same expansion, so not a one-for-one swap for Leighton either |
Is Gracie Lawrence the new lead?
The cited reporting describes Kacey as a main character, not as the series lead, and the show is built as an ensemble. Noble explained the show’s scope this way:
“At the end of the day, the show is called ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls,’ and there’s a lot of different types of college girls that can have meaningful and funny and impactful stories on TV.”

Is The Sex Lives of College Girls still being made?
Max canceled the series after three seasons, according to TheWrap’s March 18, 2025 report. At that time Noble said discussions with potential new homes were underway. The reporting does not establish a later pickup, and no new season is confirmed in the sources reviewed for this article. The same report includes Noble’s recollection of a platform ranking over roughly 70 days; that is a showrunner’s statement reproduced by the outlet, not verified viewing data, so it is not used here.
