Kate Hudson’s performance as Claire Sardina in Song Sung Blue makes a persuasive case that the qualities audiences first saw in Almost Famous—musical ease, comic warmth and emotional openness—have found a new, more mature expression. That is an interpretation, not a consensus verdict: Variety called the performance a “career-best turn,” while the film itself gives Hudson a role built around both artistic ambition and the cost of pursuing it.
What Kate Hudson plays in Song Sung Blue
Hudson plays Claire Sardina, a Milwaukee musician who teams up with Mike Sardina, played by Hugh Jackman, to form the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning and Thunder. Their musical partnership becomes a love story: they marry, build a life together and face personal hardship alongside the band’s success. The film is a 2025 musical drama written and directed by Craig Brewer, based on Greg Kohs’ 2008 documentary about the real Mike and Claire Sardina. Focus Features’ film page describes Claire’s discovery of resilience through music amid longing and adversity.

The distinction between the film and the documentary matters. Brewer said the documentary follows the couple across 16 years, while the feature condenses events into a story spanning roughly two or three years. He described the adaptation as a process of finding ways to bring scattered events together in single scenes. The film draws on real lives, but its chronology and dramatic construction are not a documentary record. Brewer’s Focus Features interview discusses that compression.
Why the role recalls Almost Famous
Almost Famous was Hudson’s breakout: Variety described her as having “stormed Hollywood at 20” in Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film. Its December 2025 feature calls her work in Song Sung Blue a “career-best turn.” Those are Variety’s assessments, not a measurable ranking of her performances. The more interesting connection is what the two roles let Hudson do: bring a lively, accessible presence to stories about people drawn toward music and the lives they want to make around it. Variety’s feature on Hudson sets the early breakthrough beside the newer performance.

Claire is an artist with a life beyond the stage
Claire is not simply a singer placed in a succession of musical numbers. Her ambition sits alongside love, domestic responsibilities, vulnerability and recovery. Hudson’s performance can therefore move between the buoyancy needed to lead a tribute act and the pain of a person whose life is not under control. That combination gives the role a broader emotional range than a straightforward showcase for a performer’s voice.
The character’s ambition has a personal resonance for Hudson
Brewer has said Hudson spoke with him about wanting to stop waiting for Hollywood to decide what roles she would get, and about wanting to make music and record an album. He said those ideas resonated with Claire’s struggle. That is Brewer’s account of their conversation, not independent proof of Hudson’s biography or motivations; it does, however, help explain why he saw a connection between actor and character. The interview also discusses Brewer’s approach to Hudson and Claire.

How the Neil Diamond songs carry the story
Music in Song Sung Blue is part of how Mike and Claire communicate, work and build a shared identity—not just a layer of nostalgia. Brewer has identified “Sweet Caroline,” “Play Me” and “Forever in Blue Jeans” as songs that build toward “Holly Holy,” which he describes as a key emotional payoff. The sequence gives the repertoire a dramatic function: familiar songs accumulate meaning through the couple’s story.
Composer and arranger Scott Bomar says Brewer arranged the Neil Diamond songs for Jackman and Hudson to perform together, with the aim of letting their vocals shine while rooting the arrangements in the Sardinas’ 1990s Milwaukee world. Richard Bennett, who played guitar with Diamond for 18 years and co-wrote songs including “Forever in Blue Jeans,” also played on Diamond songs for the film. Those contributions connect the performances to Diamond’s musical world while serving the film’s own setting and characters. Bomar’s Focus Features interview covers the arrangements and the musicians’ aims.

Does Song Sung Blue fulfill the promise of the breakout?
It can be read that way, provided “fulfill” means bringing familiar strengths together in a role with greater emotional and musical demands—not proving that the years between two films were a detour. Hudson’s Claire combines the easy charisma associated with her early breakthrough with a sustained musical performance and a portrayal of someone trying to hold onto artistic purpose through hardship. Almost Famous made her presence memorable; Song Sung Blue gives that presence a story in which music is both a craft and a reason to keep going.
The comparison is not that Claire and Hudson’s Almost Famous character are alike in every respect. Rather, the later role makes a strong case for the same basic promise—an actor able to make musical enthusiasm feel human—while asking for more sustained vulnerability. Whether it is Hudson’s best role since Almost Famous remains a critical judgment, not a settled fact; Variety’s “career-best” description is one publication’s opinion.
