In the 2025 theatrical film, Peter McVries wins. In Stephen King’s novel, the final walker standing is Ray Garraty. Both versions end with Garraty and McVries as the last two, but they part ways on who yields, who survives, and what the closing image means.

The film ending: Garraty dies and McVries wins

The 2025 adaptation was directed by Francis Lawrence and written by JT Mollner. Stephen King’s official film page lists its theatrical release as September 12, 2025, with Lionsgate as distributor. The ending described below comes from the theatrical cut as reported by TIME and GamesRadar+.

The last three walkers

The final three are Garraty, McVries and Stebbins. The finale then unfolds in five steps:

  1. Stebbins stops, leaving Garraty and McVries as the last two walkers.
  2. McVries considers sacrificing himself so that Garraty can win.
  3. Garraty refuses that outcome. He stops walking and is killed, and McVries is left as the winner.
  4. McVries asks for a gun as his winner’s wish.
  5. He shoots the Major and walks away.

Why the sacrifice matters

The film’s emotional center is the offer McVries makes and the choice Garraty makes in return. TIME describes the ending as emphasizing human connection amid brutality. That is the reporter’s reading of the scene, not a stated authorial meaning.

#1 Best Overall

The winner’s wish

The gun is the only concrete act of retaliation in the film’s finale. McVries uses the wish he has earned to kill the Major, then leaves. The reporting consulted does not show what follows for the government or the Major’s system once he walks away, so the ending closes the contest without resolving the wider world.

Garraty’s revenge plan, which the film makes explicit

The film gives Garraty a clear motive that drives his path to the finish. He intends to use the winner’s wish to obtain a gun and kill the Major, who executed Garraty’s dissident father. His relationship with McVries leads him to abandon that plan. The revenge plan and the father’s backstory are film-specific details reported in TIME and GamesRadar+. They should not be assumed to appear in the novel.

The novel ending: Garraty wins, but nothing settles

The final pair

In King’s novel, McVries bows out before the final pair is reached. Stebbins then collapses, leaving Garraty as the winner. The novel does not give Garraty the triumphant beat a reader might expect. Instead of accepting the victory, he walks toward a dark figure and runs.

The final image

TheWrap quotes the closing sentence as: “And when the hand touched his shoulder again, he somehow found the strength to run.” Check the wording against the edition you own before quoting it, since the reporting consulted quoted the line secondhand. The image leaves Garraty’s condition and future unresolved. One common reading is that the victory is emptied of meaning by the violence of the contest. That is an interpretation, not a settled explanation the novel spells out.

Why the film changed the ending

The clearest explanation comes from Mollner. In an interview with GamesRadar+ published September 12, 2025, he said: “And the goal was to make these changes without pissing off constant readers, because we wanted to keep the DNA but also put something in that would surprise people who read the book, because why have the exact same experience twice?” He also told GamesRadar+ that the team needed King’s approval and that King liked the ending. That is Mollner’s account of King’s reaction, not a direct statement from King.

Lawrence’s own framing, as reproduced by TIME from a Vanity Fair interview, centers the relationship between the two leads: “To me, that’s what the whole thing is about. The whole thing is about [Garraty and McVries] bonding, and kind of falling in love in a weird way. The conflict of what they’re there for and what they’ve been through in the past only brings them closer together. The sacrifices they make for one another, to me, is the whole movie.”

King’s reflection on the novel’s time and place

Readers often ask whether the novel is an allegory for a particular conflict. In a Vanity Fair interview reproduced by TIME, King said: “You write from your times, so certainly, that was in my mind. But I never thought about it consciously. I was writing a kind of a brutal thing. It was hopeless, and just what you write when you’re 19 years old, man. You’re full of beans and full of cynicism, and that’s the way it was.” This is King’s retrospective on the book’s roots, not proof that one reading explains everything in it.
