The latest public comments from producer Susan Downey do not confirm a plot for Sherlock Holmes 3, a filming schedule, or a release date. What she did say is that the team has discussed a different direction for the story, one that would place it in America, and that she likes the idea while being unsure whether it will work. Treat that as a development signal, not a settled story detail.
What Susan Downey said in the October 2025 interview
Downey spoke in an interview published October 1, 2025, after a Collider screening of Play Dirty hosted by Steve Weintraub. She appeared alongside director Shane Black and producer Jules Daly. The interview is the most recent on-the-record remark from a producer on the sequel that this article could confirm, and it is worth reading closely because the wording is hedged throughout.
Her central remarks on the next film were these:
- An earlier version came close. She said the team had come close to making a previous version of the sequel but stepped back. Timing did not work out before Jude Law became unavailable, and she also pointed to the pandemic as a disruption.
- A different direction is being discussed. She described a possible new approach to the story and was explicit that it is still a conversation.
- She wants to make a third film. Her stated wish is to make it, but the interview does not turn that wish into a commitment.
On the new direction, her exact words were:
“We’ve been talking about a slightly different direction,” she said. “It’s always been kind of set in America, and whether that’s a good idea or not, I’m not sure, but I love it. I love that idea. So, I would just love to do it. It’s just hard. It’s been a while, the bar is really high, or at least Robert [Downey Jr.] has set the bar really high, so I don’t know.”
The quote is the source of most of the headline attention, so it is worth being precise about what it contains. It describes a discussion and enthusiasm alongside open doubt. It does not name a city, a time period, a case, a villain, or any other plot point. Nothing in it says the film will be set in America; it says the idea has been discussed and that she likes it.

The American setting is an idea, not a plot point
Headlines describing a “plot detail” are not supported by the interview. A plot detail would be something like a named location, a case the film adapts, a villain, or a confirmed time period. Downey gave none of those. The only setting-related statement is that the story has “always been kind of set in America” in the sense that the idea has been on the table, and that she likes the direction.

Two things follow from that. First, a reader should not take the American setting as the film’s confirmed location. Second, the interview does not show whether the idea survives in any current draft. Downey’s own uncertainty, which she expressed in the same breath as her enthusiasm, is the most accurate guide to how firm the idea is.

The phrase “plot details revealed” overstates what happened. A reader who wants the most reliable summary should keep three facts apart: the earlier version was close but did not go ahead, a different direction has been discussed, and the American setting is a liked idea that Downey herself is unsure about. Each of those is a real statement; none of them is a confirmed production decision.

Susan Downey’s October 2025 comments show ongoing interest and a possible American direction, but they do not confirm that Sherlock Holmes 3 is in production, that it has a finalized plot, or that it has a release date.
