Nope follows OJ and Emerald Haywood, siblings who train and wrangle horses on their Southern California ranch. After their father’s death, they see an apparently airborne presence over the property and set out to capture it on camera. The film is about that chase, and about the people who want to turn the phenomenon into a show. This guide covers the film’s central questions in the order most readers run into them, with the ending explained in a spoiler-marked section.
What is Nope about?
Jordan Peele wrote, directed, and produced the film, which stars Daniel Kaluuya as OJ Haywood and Keke Palmer as his sister Emerald. Universal’s synopsis, dated September 13, 2022, describes the siblings observing unexplained phenomena above their ranch and trying to capture it on film. Their neighbor, Ricky “Jupe” Park, a former child star who now runs a theme-park attraction, tries to turn the same phenomenon into a spectacle. Universal describes the result as a social thriller about violence, risk, and opportunism in the romanticized American West and in show business. The running time is 2 hours and 11 minutes, according to Vanity Fair’s 2022 coverage.

What is Jean Jacket?
Jean Jacket is the film’s creature. It first appears as a UFO-like shape over the ranch, but the characters come to understand that it is a living predator. It attacks people who look directly at it, and it feeds on people and horses.
Why is the alien called Jean Jacket?
OJ gives it the name. The name refers to a horse Emerald was promised as a child. The Universal-published screenplay records Emerald’s memory that their father reassigned that horse to a film job. The name therefore ties the creature to the same film-industry world that the family is caught in.

How was the creature designed?
VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron, speaking in a Motion Picture Association interview, said Peele began with a creature that looked like a classic UFO and wanted it to evolve into something else. Rocheron describes the use of sky simulation, practical effects, and visual effects to make the creature’s movement feel grounded. These are production decisions, not claims about real-world animals or aerial phenomena.
What happened to Gordy, and why does he matter?
Gordy is a chimpanzee who was the star of the fictional sitcom Gordy’s Home, on which Jupe was a child actor. During a violent incident on the set, Gordy attacks the cast, and Jupe survives. As an adult, Jupe builds a park attraction around his entertainment career and tries to present Jean Jacket to a paying audience, believing he can control the event and profit from it. That attempt ends in catastrophe.
Gordy’s story is the film’s clearest parallel to the creature. In an interview with ComingSoon published October 25, 2022, Peele said:
“A lot of people, I don’t think, even picked up necessarily in [their] first viewing on the connections between Gordy the chimp, who is a trained animal who shouldn’t be in this situation, and Jean Jacket, who is, for all intents and purposes, also a trained animal. The underlying connection between these animals and our characters, I think, is also present. In a way, I look at all of them as trained animals, and I look at all of us as trained animals as well. So the film in itself comes back to being about this system of exploitation we’re all kind of wrapped up in, in our own different ways.”

Spoiler section: how the ending works
Spoiler warning: the rest of this article discusses the Jupiter’s Claim sequence and the final scenes in detail.
What happens at Jupiter’s Claim
Jupe’s attempt to lure Jean Jacket into a show ends with the creature taking him and his audience. The sequence shows the spectacle Jupe built turning on the people who came to watch it.
Why eye contact matters
OJ works out that direct eye contact provokes the creature. This insight lets him and Lucky avoid the behavior that makes other people vulnerable. It is the only rule the film sets out clearly, and it governs how the final confrontation plays out.
What Emerald captures
During the final pursuit, Emerald reaches the park’s well camera and captures an image as the creature is destroyed. Jean Jacket is destroyed after Emerald deploys a giant balloon figure from the park; the creature consumes it and explodes. The image Emerald gets is not the fully realized video proof the siblings had been chasing throughout the film.

Is OJ alive at the end?
The final image shows OJ at Jupiter’s Claim with Lucky, and Emerald reacts to seeing him, which the film presents as a reunion. Viewers have discussed how the image is staged, but the film does not establish that anything else is going on. Treat any reading that OJ did not survive as a fan interpretation rather than something the film states.
What the ending means
The ending can be read as both a triumph and a warning. The siblings achieve their goal of destroying the creature and getting a record of it, but the record is not the spectacle they imagined, and the cost of the chase is visible in every scene. That reading is an interpretation of the film’s staging, not a plot fact.

Several readings fit the film. They overlap, and the film does not settle on one.
Spectacle consumes its pursuers
Jupe tries to make the creature an attraction, and the Haywoods pursue an image that could be lucrative. The film repeatedly makes looking and recording dangerous. Vanity Fair’s 2022 coverage reads the film as a warning about the destructive force of spectacle.

Peele’s interview comments above make this the most direct reading. He connects Gordy, Jean Jacket, and the human characters to a system of exploitation. Universal’s synopsis frames the film around the same risk and opportunism in show business.
Recording can reclaim erased history
Time’s 2022 analysis notes that Emerald identifies the Haywoods’ ancestor as the Black jockey in Muybridge’s early motion study, and that the account it discusses does not preserve the jockey’s name. Read this way, the siblings’ wish to make an undeniable image is also a bid for recognition and historical visibility. Time presents this as analysis of the film’s history, not as a meaning the studio has confirmed.
The Muybridge reference
The Muybridge scene connects the Haywoods to the early history of motion pictures. Eadweard Muybridge’s motion studies are among the earliest photographic records of animals in movement, and the film uses that history to frame its interest in the image that can prove something. The scene matters because it places the family’s ancestor inside the origins of the medium the siblings are trying to use. The film does not explain the ancestor’s name, and that absence is part of the point.
