More often, she says, an attitude leaves them out of the main chronological account—or includes them only in a separate category. “I don’t think it is an exclusion as much as an attitude that does not make women part of Tamil literary history or makes them part of it in specific ways,” she told Scroll.in in 2017.
What Ambai means by an “attitude”
Ambai, the pen name of Tamil writer C.S. Lakshmi, is describing more than whether women’s names appear somewhere in a book. Her criticism is about where and how they appear: women may be omitted from a general literary history, then reserved for a separate chapter or a history devoted specifically to women. That treatment can make them seem supplementary to Tamil literature rather than part of its shared development.
She illustrates the distinction with an account from her own experience. In the 1970s, a friend writing a modern literary history of Tamil left out all women writers. When Ambai challenged him, she recalls, he replied: “But this is literary history. When we write specifically about women writers we will include women writers.” For Ambai, that response captures the problem: women are acknowledged in principle but not placed in the account of literature as a whole.
Why chronology and context matter
Separate classification also separates writers from the time in which they wrote. Ambai points to Rajam Krishnan and R. Chudamani, who were writing from the 1950s. She argues that their work should be read alongside that of their contemporaries, not detached from its period and gathered into a category of women’s writing.

She recalls a similar pattern in an introduction to a translated collection of about 88 Tamil stories. In her account, the introduction discussed literary history through male writers and followed what she calls a chronological “male order.” The issue, then, is not simply whether an anthology or history contains women’s work. It is whether women are positioned within the same literary timeline and historical conversation as men.
Ambai calls this treatment “grossly unfair” and “historically a faulty way of writing literary history.” She also puts the underlying assumption sharply: “As if women’s bodies are not touched by time and history.” These are her judgments and examples from the interview, not a statistical survey of every history of Tamil literature.

Ambai’s work and the wider conversation
Scroll identifies Ambai as C.S. Lakshmi and notes that her fiction has often been pigeonholed because of its feminism. The 2017 interview, published around the English translation of her story collection A Night with a Black Spider, also discusses women’s place in the Tamil literary arena from the 1970s onward and the tendency to treat women writers as if they write only about family life. Those are parts of the conversation she describes, not findings from a survey of writers or readers.
Lakshmi’s work extends beyond fiction. A 2019 University of Chicago profile describes her as an independent women’s studies researcher, identifies her as director of SPARROW (the Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women), and lists her nonfiction book The Face Behind the Mask: Women in Tamil Literature (1984). The profile also records fellowships awarded in 1981 and 1992; these are historical biographical details, not claims about current appointments or funding.
