The latest reported ride took place on Sunday, January 11, 2026; that date and its meeting details are not a standing schedule.
How the No Trousers Tube Ride works
Participants gather in ordinary clothes, then remove their trousers once they are inside a station or aboard the train. They keep their underwear on and try to behave normally during a short Tube journey. The point is the contrast: an unusual sight treated with everyday nonchalance.
The name is a transatlantic language distinction. In British English, “pants” usually means underwear, so London uses “No Trousers” to make clear what participants remove.
When was the latest London ride?
The latest reported edition was on Sunday, January 11, 2026. For that ride, Londonist’s guide said participants were to meet in Chinatown by 2:45 p.m. for a 3 p.m. departure, stay dressed at the meeting point, bring a bag for their trousers and follow a group leader to a nearby station. These were instructions for the 2026 edition, not a promise about future dates, routes or arrangements. Check the organizers’ current announcement before making plans.

Earlier logistics differed. Time Out’s 2025 guide described a Chinatown meeting point at the Old Pagoda, followed by groups travelling to a nearby station. Its information that attendance was free apart from the Tube fare and required no booking applies to 2025; it does not establish the terms for another year.
Where did the tradition come from?
London’s event takes its inspiration from New York’s No Pants Subway Ride, which began in 2002. London reporting dates the local tradition to 2009. RTÉ’s report on the 2026 ride described it as an annual London ritual and identified Dave Selkirk as an organizer.

What is the point—and is it for charity?
The event is intended as fun for its own sake, not as a charity fundraiser or political demonstration. Selkirk told RTÉ: “The world is a rough place at the moment, and it’s lovely to have something that is just for the sake of fun.”
Associated Press coverage of the 2025 ride quoted Selkirk saying, “There’s so much bad, so much not fun going on,” and, “It’s nice to do something just for the sake of it.” New York event founder Charlie Todd described the original aim as amusement rather than provocation: “My rule in New York was always the goal of this event is to amuse other people, to give people a laugh. It’s not to be provocative, it’s not to irritate someone. So hopefully the spirit of that continues.”

How many people take part?
Attendance descriptions vary by edition and outlet, and there is no established official participation dataset. RTÉ estimated around 100 participants at the 2026 ride. The Associated Press characterized the 2025 turnout as hundreds. Both are press descriptions, not verified counts or a comparable attendance series.
What should a potential participant consider?
This is a public-transport event, so deciding whether to join is a matter of personal comfort rather than meeting a stated eligibility test. Consider whether you are comfortable wearing underwear in public and on a busy train, and whether you can manage winter conditions while waiting outdoors. The 2025 invitation suggested keeping underwear “pants as normal or low-key as possible, so it looks like you’ve just forgotten your trousers”. For the 2026 ride, organizers’ instructions included carrying trousers in a bag; wear warm outer layers until the event moves indoors and follow the current group leader’s directions.

Is it illegal?
The available coverage does not establish a legal ruling covering every possible form of participation. A participant quoted by RTÉ said, “It’s not illegal but like pushing the envelope a little bit, I like it,” but that is a participant’s opinion, not legal advice or an authoritative legal conclusion. Anyone considering taking part should follow organizer guidance and the rules of the transport network.
