Its emotional core, the bond between Lilo and her older sister Nani and the idea of family as something mended rather than given up on, carries over from the 2002 animated film. Where the remake falters, the two major professional reviews discussed here agree on one point: the added action and spectacle can crowd the small, specific story that made the original work.
What this version is, and what it is not
This is a live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated feature, not the original film with new footage. Disney lists May 23, 2025 as its US release date. Dean Fleischer Camp directed. The cast includes Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, and Chris Sanders.
Disney’s official synopsis describes a lonely Hawaiian girl and a fugitive alien who help mend her broken family. The premise is the same as the animated film. What changes is the proportion of spectacle to quiet domestic scenes, and that change is where most of the critical debate sits.
The visual case: Stitch in the frame and Hawaii on screen
The “visual treat” claim rests on two things: how convincingly Stitch sits inside live-action scenes, and whether the Hawaiian setting feels specific rather than decorative.

Integrating Stitch into live-action scenes
The Associated Press review by Jake Coyle, published May 20, 2025, credits director Camp with adeptness at mixing human performers and digital characters, and praises the expressive way Stitch is realized. The Guardian’s review of the same date is harsher on the visual effects and presentation. The two reviews therefore agree that the basic trick works, but disagree about whether the effects work is delivered cleanly across the film. A viewer checking this claim should watch whether Stitch’s reactions land in ordinary two-shots with the sisters, not only in the large set pieces.
Hawaii as setting rather than backdrop
Disney’s production material says the adaptation was built to honor cultural nuance and describes the difficulty of translating the source into a live-action setting. That is the studio’s stated intention, and it comes from a promotional source. The independent reviews consulted here do not deliver a definitive judgment on whether the islands feel lived-in or merely picturesque.

A practical test while watching: notice whether the locations and daily routines (the sisters’ home life, the places they go, the way work and money pressure show up) drive scenes or simply frame them.
The warm core: Lilo, Nani, and ohana
Disney frames Stitch’s role as helping to mend Lilo’s broken family, and family and belonging are the film’s central themes. This is the part of the remake most likely to hold up for returning viewers, because it depends on performance and tone rather than effects.

The AP review argues that the family message survives despite an overloaded conclusion. The Guardian acknowledges that the film has “a few affecting and funny moments.” Neither review treats the emotional material as a failure; the criticism is aimed at how much else surrounds it.
Where the critics split
| Review | Date | On the visuals | On the story | Key phrasing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Associated Press (Jake Coyle) | May 20, 2025 | Praises Camp for mixing human performers and digital characters; praises the expressive realization of Stitch | Finds the film overstuffed with action and spectacle; says the family message survives an overloaded conclusion | Headline: “sweet but utterly unnecessary” |
| The Guardian | May 20, 2025 | Criticizes the visual-effects presentation | Notes affecting and funny moments; the byline is not stated in the source used for this article | “a few affecting and funny moments” |
These are two individual reviews by two outlets, not a consensus. Read them as opinions on the same film from the same week, with the disagreement concentrated on the spectacle rather than the heart of the story.

Action and plot changes: energy or clutter?
The fourth comparison axis is whether the added action and plot changes improve or crowd the story. The AP reads them as inflating the film, and its complaint is about the conclusion in particular. The Guardian’s objections focus on how the effects are presented. For original fans, the question is practical: do the added set pieces give the film momentum, or do they push aside the smaller scenes that gave the 2002 film its character?

- Added action and plot: Does the extra spectacle give the story energy, or does it bury the quieter moments you remember?
If the first and third questions matter most to you, the remake is likely to satisfy. If the second and fourth matter most, expect a more mixed experience, as the critical record suggests.
