Listeners are divided because AR Rahman’s version of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s anti-colonial song, featured in the film Pippa, uses a new tune and arrangement. Some listeners hear a respectful reinterpretation. Others hear a break from the melody, the way the words sit in the music, and the protest force they associate with the original. The disagreement also became a family and legal dispute in late 2023 and early 2024. The reporting from those months is clearer than any measure of public opinion, and it is dated: the sources do not establish what has happened since early 2024.
What the original song is
Kazi Nazrul Islam is credited as both writer and composer of Karar Oi Louho Kapat. The Indian Express reports that he wrote it in 1922 as a nationalist anthem against British rule, and that folk singer Girin Chakraborty first recorded it in June 1949. The song is usually spelled Karar Oi Louho Kapat in Bengali-language reporting. A Bangladesh court writ, as reported, uses the spelling Kopat, which is the same song.
A Daily Star opinion article by Dr Nashid Kamal, an academic, Nazrul Sangeet exponent and translator, places the song in its anti-colonial setting and describes its publication in Bhangar Gaan. Treat those historical details as the author’s account rather than an archival citation.
What changed in the Pippa version
Rahman’s rendition replaces Nazrul’s tune with a new composition and arrangement for the film. The table below sets out the points that critics and defenders argue about. Where the reporting does not describe a detail, the cell says so.

| Arrangement | Not applicable to the original as reported | A new arrangement; specific instrumentation and tempo not stated in the reporting reviewed |
| Setting of the lyrics | Words set to Nazrul’s tune | Words set to the new tune; critics disagree on whether the phrasing and stress hold up, and the reporting does not resolve it |
| Public association | Anti-colonial protest song from 1922 | Reception split between a tribute reading and a view that the tone is too light for the lyrics |
| Permission | Nazrul’s original tune is the reference point for the family’s objection | The makers say their license allowed lyrics with a new composition; the contract was not reviewed in the reporting |
Why listeners split
The disagreement combines musical judgments, cultural memory and a question about rights. Each is worth separating, because a person can accept one and reject another.
The familiar melody
For many listeners, this song is not interchangeable lyrics that can be sung to any tune. Kamal argues in his opinion piece that Nazrul allowed individual singers to bring their own styles to his songs, but insisted on keeping his tune. That is an attributed claim about Nazrul’s intentions, and it is the strongest version of the case against the Pippa rendition.

Word-setting and delivery
Some commenters objected to how the words were set and parsed in the new arrangement. Others said the arrangement was distinctive or beautiful. These are reactions to a sung performance, not measurements, and this article does not judge Bengali prosody on its own authority. Readers who want a technical assessment should look for a qualified music or language specialist’s analysis.
The protest force of the lyrics
The original’s anti-colonial history shapes what listeners expect from it. Some online critics said the new musical tone seemed too light for lyrics written as a call against colonial rule. Supporters valued the fresh approach and the way it reframed the song for a new audience. Both are aesthetic responses, and neither can be checked against a benchmark.

Reinterpretation and permission
Some listeners welcome a new reading of an old song and see reinterpretation as part of how music lives on. Others see continuity with the familiar tune as part of respecting a cultural work. The permission question is separate from the aesthetic one. A listener can find the Pippa version artistically interesting and still think the rights were handled poorly, or the reverse. The makers’ account of their license is their own statement, not an independent ruling on its terms.
What the online reaction shows, and what it does not
In November 2023, Scroll reported a range of responses to the new rendition, including praise for the arrangement and criticism from listeners who felt it departed from the original’s essence. A typical approving post, by Diya Gangopadhyay on November 7, 2023, described the work as a “beautiful tribute” that used a whole new composition while staying “true to the spirit of the original song.”

These posts are selected examples. They show that both positions existed in public, but they do not show how large either group was. The Business Standard, in a story that also drew on Hindustan Times reporting, quoted online commenters as well. That too is evidence of reported criticism, not a poll. No representative audience measurement of the song’s reception was found in the reporting, so readers should treat any claim of a majority view with caution.

According to the Indian Express, a section of Nazrul’s family asked the makers to remove Rahman’s rendition or to include the song in its original tune. The makers apologized for what they called “unintended distress.” The same report says they argued that the license permitted lyrics with a new composition. Whether the license says that is not established here, because the contract was not reviewed.

Kamal’s opinion piece quotes Nazrul as saying: “I should be recognised in my song, do not stampede it with your lorry.” The article attributes the remark to Nazrul and places it in a discussion of how he expected his songs to be rendered. No primary archival source for the quotation was located in the reporting, so readers should treat it as the author’s attribution.
The Bangladesh High Court direction
The Business Standard reported that on January 9, 2024, Bangladesh’s High Court directed BTRC, the country’s telecom regulator, to remove the rendition from online platforms after hearing a writ petition. The petition argued that listeners would be confused if both the familiar tune composed by Bangladesh’s national poet and the distorted version remained available online. That is language attributed to the petition, not a quotation from the court’s own reasoning.
The reporting reviewed does not establish whether the direction was carried out, on which platforms, or what procedural steps followed. Do not describe the rendition as taken down across platforms unless a later primary report confirms it.
What remains unsettled
- Whether the license given to the film’s makers covers new lyrics set to a new composition, as the makers say, is a question the reporting does not settle.
- Whether the Bangladesh High Court direction was implemented, and what its current status is, is not established by the reporting from January 2024.
- Whether reactions have changed since late 2023 is not established by any source covering that period.
- How widely either view is held among listeners is not measured in the available reporting.
The fair reading is that the Pippa version has supporters who hear a fresh tribute and critics who hear a betrayal of the original’s tune and purpose, with a rights dispute layered on top. Anyone asked to judge it on musical grounds should listen to the original Nazrul recording and the Pippa rendition side by side, and decide which of the points in the table above matters most to them.
