In a Collider interview republished by Filmibee on December 1, 2024, Laysla De Oliveira and Genesis Rodriguez describe Season 2 of Lioness as a story about people who carry personal damage into work that uses it. De Oliveira plays Cruz Manuelos, who returns having changed after Season 1 and is trying to turn guilt into a clearer understanding of the system she serves. Rodriguez plays Captain Josie Carrillo, whose mission is tied to her own family and who finds a steadier ally in Cruz than in the operation’s demands. The interview contains Season 2 spoilers.
What the interview covers
The conversation follows the way the two characters first meet, how Josie’s isolation shapes her decisions, how Cruz’s perspective has shifted since Season 1, and how the actresses prepared physically. It also takes up trauma, loyalty, and the moral question of whether a mission’s ends can justify its means. The actors speak about their characters and their own performance choices. Their remarks are not clinical claims about trauma, and they are not a consensus view of the series.
How Cruz comes back changed
De Oliveira frames Cruz’s arc as a response to pain rather than a simple path of toughening up. Her description of the character’s approach is the interview’s most quotable line:
“what she’s trying to do is turn that pain into power to understand the dynamics of the geopolitical machine that she’s a part of.”

Pain as a way of seeing the system
In De Oliveira’s account, Cruz is not only reacting to what happened to her. She is thinking more intellectually about the institution she works within, and that analysis is what she brings to Josie. The distinction matters for how the performance reads: Cruz is portrayed as someone whose experience has made her more watchful and more critical, not someone who has simply become harder.
Guilt and the idea of selflessness
De Oliveira also points to the moral weight Cruz carries. She describes the show’s core as the way these characters set aside their own traumas to protect and fight for their country:
“The crux of the whole show is how these people put aside their own personal traumas and how they are selfless to protect the country and to fight for the country.”

That framing explains why the mission feels costly even when it looks procedurally clear. The characters are asked to keep functioning while their private histories are still open.

Readers who expect a new recruit learning the ropes will find something different. The interview presents Josie as an experienced Army captain with authority and a strong personality. TV Insider, which published a separate Rodriguez interview on October 27, 2024, identifies her as Captain Josie Carrillo and explains that the show recruits her because of her family connection to a cartel leader. That background gives Josie a different kind of pressure from Cruz’s: she has the rank and training to lead, but the mission reaches into her own family.
Rodriguez’s view of the relationship between the two women is built on that imbalance. She says Cruz makes Josie feel less alone by speaking to her as a person facing a frightening task:

“she suddenly doesn’t feel so alone and so alienated.”
Why the mission is personal
The interview ties the mission to Josie’s family, and De Oliveira says Cruz understands what Josie is going through because she has faced a comparable situation herself. The parallel does not make the stakes lighter. De Oliveira says Cruz is working with high stakes and real sacrifice, so the bond between the two characters grows out of shared experience rather than mentorship alone.
Physicality as storytelling
Both actresses treat the body as part of the characterization. Rodriguez credits training done before filming with helping communicate who Josie is:

“The physicality and the training that we had prior to the show really helped with telling the story.”
Posture and movement
Rodriguez’s point is that the training shaped how Josie carries herself, which in turn carries information about rank, control and fatigue. Read this way, physical choices are part of the drama rather than a separate skill set.
Walk and fight choreography
De Oliveira discusses developing Cruz’s walk and learning fight choreography. Both are presented as ways of making Cruz’s history visible without dialogue, consistent with the interview’s focus on how she has been changed by Season 1.

Where to watch or buy Season 2
Season 2 was announced by Paramount with a two-episode premiere on October 27, 2024, followed by weekly releases, and the distributor described it as a Paramount+ exclusive in the U.S. and international markets where the service is available. Paramount+ later described eight planned episodes released weekly after the premiere. Because that was 2024 information, check current availability for your country before assuming a title is still on the service.

The choice comes down to whether you want ongoing access through a streaming service or a physical copy of this season. A streaming subscription depends on territory and catalog placement, which change over time. A disc gives you the season independent of a service, but availability and region compatibility need to be checked for your own player.
