Yes, a third Mamma Mia! film has strong development support—but no official release date, filming start, full cast announcement, plot details or soundtrack have been established in the latest reporting reviewed here. NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley said in February 2026 that there would be another film and that she was actively discussing it with producer Judy Craymer. Craymer had also said the team knew what it wanted to do. Those are significant signals, not a production schedule.
Is Mamma Mia 3 happening?
The project has credible momentum. In May 2025, producer Judy Craymer told Deadline, in an interview quoted by ELLE, “we know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen.” ELLE described the film as in development, not yet in production.

In February 2026, NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley told Deadline, as reported by CinemaBlend: “Yes, I’m going to say right now that there will be a Mamma Mia 3.” Langley also said she did not know when filming would begin, but was talking actively with Craymer.
Together, the comments point to active development conversations and executive confidence. They do not confirm that filming has been scheduled or that a public production plan is in place.

When will Mamma Mia 3 be released?
No official release date has been announced. Capital FM, in an article updated 28 August 2026, reports that the film has no official date. There is also no confirmed filming start in the statements cited above, so a release year cannot be reliably inferred.
Will Meryl Streep return?
Streep has expressed enthusiasm about doing another film. Capital FM reports that, when asked during an April 2026 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert whether she would return, she replied, “Damn yes!” That signals willingness; it is not a formal casting announcement or an explanation of how Donna would appear.

- Factory sealed DVD
The second film established that Donna had died. The franchise’s official page describes the first two films and their casts, but does not announce a third-film ensemble. No full cast list for the next film has been established in the reporting cited here. Expressions of interest or speculation about who might return should not be mistaken for confirmed casting.
What could the story be about?
The story has not been disclosed. The official franchise page describes the first film as centered on Donna and Sophie; the 2018 sequel brought back the central ensemble and added Lily James, Andy Garcia and Cher. As ELLE recounts, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again follows the hotel’s reopening after Donna’s death while Sophie learns she is pregnant. Craymer has said the team knows what it wants to do with a third film, but has not shared its detailed storyline in the reporting cited here.
Rank #3
A story about Donna’s family or Sophie’s life after the sequel may be an understandable fan theory, but it remains speculation—not a confirmed plot summary.
Which ABBA songs will be in it?
No songs have been confirmed for a third-film soundtrack. ABBA’s catalog gives the filmmakers plenty of material to draw on, but fan wish lists and songs suggested in coverage are not evidence of soundtrack choices. Capital FM discusses possibilities; it does not report an official track list.

How to catch up on the two released films
Watch them in release order: Mamma Mia! (2008), which establishes Donna, Sophie and the central paternity mystery, followed by Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), which combines present-day events with scenes from Donna’s past. The official franchise page provides details on both films. Physical editions may be available, but current formats and stock depend on the retailer.
