By the end of 2025, A Minecraft Movie had grossed a reported $958.2 million worldwide, about 6.4 times its listed $150 million production budget. That comparison measures theatrical gross against production cost—not profit. The budget excludes marketing and promotion, and box-office receipts are not the same as the studio’s take.
What the budget and worldwide gross figures show
Box Office Mojo and The Numbers list A Minecraft Movie’s production budget at $150 million. The Numbers also reports a worldwide-gross-to-production-budget multiple of 6.4. The Associated Press’s year-end 2025 box-office review put the film’s worldwide gross at $958.2 million.

Dividing that year-end gross by the reported production budget yields roughly 6.4. The figure supports the headline comparison, provided “budget” means reported production budget and “global box office” means worldwide theatrical gross.
Why 6.4 times the budget does not mean 6.4 times the profit
The $150 million figure is a production budget, not a complete accounting of what the film cost to release. The AP reported that it excludes marketing and promotion. The gross figure, meanwhile, is ticket sales at theaters worldwide—not the amount Warner Bros. kept after exhibitors’ shares, distribution costs, and other expenses.

So the ratio is a useful scale comparison, not a profit margin, break-even calculation, or return-on-investment figure. The cited figures do not establish the film’s net profit.
How the film’s box-office run reached that scale
Opening weekend: $301 million worldwide
On April 6, 2025, the AP reported an estimated $301 million worldwide opening: $157 million in the United States and Canada and $144 million internationally. The worldwide debut exceeded an $80 million analyst projection, according to the AP. That opening-weekend total was about twice the reported production budget, but it is distinct from the much larger year-end gross.

The AP also reported that the debut surpassed the previous opening-weekend record for a video-game adaptation. Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chair and CEO Pamela Abdy told the AP, “We’re just thrilled that audiences are responding and that everyone’s going to the theater.” That is her reaction to the opening, not independent evidence of why audiences attended.
The year-end total
The $958.2 million figure is the AP’s year-end 2025 report. It should be read as a dated reported total, not as an independently verified final audited ledger as of today. Warner Bros. Discovery’s August 2025 shareholder letter does not provide a standalone gross for the movie; it says four second-quarter releases, including A Minecraft Movie, generated more than $2 billion combined.

How to read the different reported figures
| Figure | What it represents | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $150 million | Reported production budget | Listed by Box Office Mojo and The Numbers; AP says production cost excludes marketing and promotion. |
| $301 million | Worldwide opening | AP estimate reported April 6, 2025: $157 million domestic and $144 million international. |
| $958.2 million | Worldwide gross | AP’s year-end 2025 box-office review. |
| More than $2 billion | Combined worldwide box office for four Warner Bros. second-quarter films | Warner Bros. Discovery’s August 7, 2025 shareholder letter; not a standalone total for A Minecraft Movie. |
Why some 2025 totals may look different
Warner Bros. Japan announced that the film had earned more than ¥135 billion worldwide as of June 2, 2025, converting the amount at ¥143 to the dollar. That is a dated, yen-denominated studio-market announcement with a stated exchange-rate conversion, not a competing exact dollar total for the year-end comparison.
