Contemporary reporting linked her departure to backlash after older social media posts containing an anti-Asian racial slur resurfaced. Ortega later apologized, said she accepted the network’s decision, and described her video as an accountability statement.
What the show said about Ortega’s departure
In the July 6, 2025, episode, narrator Iain Stirling said Ortega had “left the villa due to a personal situation.” That was the broadcast’s explanation; it did not mention the controversy in the announcement. ABC News and the Associated Press reported the wording.
What reporting said preceded her exit
The Associated Press reported on July 8 that Ortega’s departure followed weeks of viewer backlash after older posts containing a racial slur against Asian people resurfaced. The AP said a show spokesperson declined to comment. The available reporting connects the exit with the controversy, but does not establish Peacock’s internal decision-making, a formal disciplinary process, or a specific policy behind it.
Ortega entered Season 7 as a bombshell and had been coupled with Nic Vansteenberghe. The AP reported that, in the same episode in which her departure was announced, Vansteenberghe recoupled with Olandria Carthen.

What Ortega said in her response
In a video published after returning to the United States, Ortega called it “an accountability video,” rather than an apology video. The AP quoted her saying, “I had no idea that the word held as much pain, as much harm, and came with the history that it did, or I never would have used it.” She added: “I had no ill intention when I was using it, but that’s absolutely no excuse because intent doesn’t excuse ignorance.”
Ortega said a follower corrected her in 2024 after she used the term in an Instagram story. She said she learned its meaning and history then and removed it from her vocabulary. ABC News also reported that she wrote in an Instagram story, “I do not, and have never, condoned racism or the repression of any cultural group in any form.” These are Ortega’s accounts of what she knew and when.

I think that this is something that deserved punishment and the punishment has absolutely been received.” That statement conveys Ortega’s view; it is not an independent explanation from the production.
What Ortega and her family said about backlash
Ortega said her family did not feel safe and that law enforcement had been called on them. Her family separately asked for compassion and patience, describing threats and cruel messages directed at them, friends, and supporters. These concerns were reported as claims by Ortega and her family, not as independently verified incidents.

Ortega rejected responding to hostility with more hostility, saying, “There’s no need to fight hate with hate. I don’t think that that’s justice.” Former contestant Belle-A Walker, whom the AP identified as Asian American, said in an Instagram story that she appreciated producers “for taking a stand and making it clear that racism of any kind is not tolerated.” Walker also wrote, “Asian hate is oftentimes overlooked and dismissed.”

The clearest distinction is between the short explanation aired on July 6 and the context reported afterward: the episode cited a personal situation, while AP reporting connected the departure to backlash over resurfaced posts. Ortega’s video expressed remorse and acceptance of the network’s decision, but the supplied contemporaneous reporting does not detail the production’s deliberations. AP and ABC News published accounts of her response on July 10, 2025.
