Season 1 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ends with Cate Randa, May and Keiko Miura escaping Axis Mundi, Lee Shaw staying behind to hold the way out, and the survivors surfacing in 2017 on Skull Island as Kong appears. Season 2 has already aired: Apple’s official series page lists its premiere as February 27, 2026, and Apple’s episode listing runs through a May 1, 2026 finale. This recap is a spoiler-aware catch-up for anyone starting or revisiting the show before Season 2.
Where the story starts: Godzilla and a hidden family connection
The series begins after Godzilla’s 2014 attack on San Francisco makes the Titans known to the public. Cate Randa, a young woman whose life has been shaped by that event, learns that her father, Hiroshi, had a concealed connection to Monarch, the organization that studies the creatures. Apple describes the series as a sibling investigation that leads into Monarch, the monsters and Lee Shaw’s past (Apple TV Press series page).
The people you need to keep straight
- Cate Randa is the investigator in the present-day, post-G-Day timeline.
- Kentaro is Cate’s half-brother. He follows the same family trail, so the two are not full siblings.
- Hiroshi is their father, the man whose hidden Monarch ties start the investigation.
- Keiko Miura is Hiroshi’s mother. She disappeared into a rift decades earlier, and her absence is the reason the family story spans generations.
- Lee Shaw is an Army officer whose past is tied to Monarch’s early work and to Keiko.
- Bill Randa is a scientist connected to Monarch’s early history in the 1950s and early 1960s timeline.
Two timelines, two different questions
The show moves between the post-G-Day investigation and the 1950s and early 1960s, when Monarch was taking shape. Apple’s series description and the finale accounts support the split below.

Keep the two timelines in view when you watch. Most of the emotional payoff in Season 1 comes from the moment the older story and the family story meet.

The family thread: Keiko’s disappearance and Hiroshi’s search
The central personal history is Keiko’s disappearance into a rift and Hiroshi’s effort to find her. That search is why Cate and Kentaro end up digging into Monarch’s records. The show keeps the relationships explicit: Cate and Kentaro share a father, Hiroshi is Keiko’s son, and Lee’s connection to Keiko runs through the older Monarch timeline (TV Insider’s Season 1 ending recap).
How Season 1 ends
The finale covers several locations and two different years, so the sequence is easier to follow in order.

1. Lee’s attempt to close a portal in 2015
Lee tries to close a portal. The attempt leaves him, Cate and May trapped in Axis Mundi, a realm the show uses for its time distortion. Inside, they find Keiko alive.
2. The escape from a Titan
A Titan threatens the group. They use the Operation Hourglass vehicle and a Titan-bait capsule to reach the rift. Godzilla appears during the escape.

3. Lee stays behind
Lee remains behind so Cate, May and Keiko can get out. His choice is the emotional turn of the finale, and TVLine’s finale account covers the decision in detail (TVLine’s showrunner interview and finale account).
4. The return to the surface in 2017
Cate, May and Keiko come back to the surface in 2017. Hiroshi reunites with Keiko, which resolves the family storyline that Season 1 has been building toward.

5. The Apex link and the Skull Island reveal
The apparent rescue operation is connected to Apex Cybernetics. The final reveal places the characters on Skull Island as Kong appears. Apple’s Season 2 setup describes that island as a reunion point for the series, alongside a mysterious village and a Titan rising from the sea (Apple TV Press series page).

Time moves differently in Axis Mundi than on the surface, which is why Keiko looks far younger than her adult son when she returns. TV Insider describes the realm as one where time moves more slowly. Showrunner Chris Black has acknowledged that the show did not follow a strict, consistent formula for it, so treat any exact time ratio as variable rather than as a clean conversion.

What the finale leaves open
The ending resolves Keiko’s return to her family. It does not settle two threads: Lee’s fate, and the relationship between Apex and Monarch. Both are set up as hooks for the next season.
Why the show is built around people, not monsters
Showrunner Chris Black explained the approach to TVLine. He said: “We knew going in that we couldn’t do a TV show that was just about monsters; that was unsupportable from a production standpoint, but also I felt personally, as a fan of serialized television, that you weren’t going to tune in week after week to watch Godzilla kicking buildings over.” That focus explains why the family and Monarch-history scenes carry as much weight as the creature sequences.
Before you start Season 2
- Remember that Cate and Kentaro are half-siblings investigating Hiroshi’s hidden Monarch ties.
- Keep the 1950s and early 1960s timeline in mind: Lee, Keiko and Bill Randa are the people connecting Monarch’s early history to the family.
- Remember that Keiko is Hiroshi’s mother and that her rift disappearance drives the family story.
- Expect Axis Mundi to bend time, and don’t assume a fixed conversion.
- Remember that Lee stayed behind, that the group returned in 2017, and that the finale ends on Skull Island with Kong.
