Netflix says the 33-minute episode was filmed in one take, without cuts. Koch and Ari Graynor, who plays Abramson, rehearsed once, then filmed eight full-episode takes over two days.
What happens in “The Hurt Man”?
The episode centers on Erik Menendez, played by Koch, speaking with his attorney Leslie Abramson, played by Graynor. In the extended conversation, Erik recounts allegations of abuse by his parents. Netflix describes the episode as a sustained account rather than a conventional sequence of scenes, giving the character room to speak without interruption.
That is the series’ dramatic framing, not an independent finding about the real case. Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents in 1996. Netflix’s account of the case distinguishes the prosecution’s argument that the brothers acted for family wealth from the brothers’ claims that abuse and fear shaped their actions. The series presents multiple perspectives rather than settling their motive as a definitive factual conclusion.
How did Koch and Graynor film the episode?
Netflix’s production account says “The Hurt Man” runs 33 minutes and was shot as a single take, with no cuts. Koch and Graynor rehearsed the scene once before filming eight episode-length takes across two days. They prepared through conversations with each other, co-creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, director Michael Uppendahl, and cinematographer Jason McCormick.

The single-take format also shaped how the camera directs attention. The Television Academy describes a slow movement that gradually brings viewers closer to Koch. Brennan explained the aim: “We have to figure out a way that we don’t let the audience look away.”
How did Koch prepare for the performance?
Koch told TheWrap that he read the script every day before filming and worked to make the memories feel specific and emotionally real to him. “I read it every day leading up to [filming]. I had this groove for a long time, I read it before I went to bed,” he said.

That account describes an actor’s preparation for a scripted portrayal. It should not be mistaken for corroboration of the allegations voiced by the character. Murphy described the episode’s purpose as giving Erik space to speak: “The goal of that episode was to basically give Erik Menendez his day in court, to talk about what had happened to him uninterrupted, with no bias.” The episode’s uninterrupted form is a creative choice; it is not a judicial finding.

A continuous take makes the conversation feel sustained: viewers remain with Koch’s performance rather than moving between edited scenes. The gradual camera approach described by the Television Academy reinforces that focus. The format also places unusual demands on performance and production: the actors must carry the scene through its full length, while the crew must keep the shot working across the episode.
