‘In the Heart of the Sea’ True Story: All About the Real Whale Attack

The 2015 film In the Heart of the Sea is based on the real sinking of the Nantucket whaleship Essex by a sperm whale in 1820. Here is what the sources document, where accounts disagree, and what is dramatized.

Yes. In the Heart of the Sea is rooted in a real disaster. The Nantucket whaleship Essex was twice rammed by a sperm whale in the mid-Pacific on November 20, 1820, and sank. The 2015 film is based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s nonfiction book about the event, published in 2000. The Essex story also helped inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, but the novel is fiction, and the white whale it describes was not a real animal.

What happened to the Essex

The Essex left Nantucket in 1819 as a sperm whaler. Its crew numbered twenty. On November 20, 1820, a sperm whale rammed the ship twice, and it sank in the mid-Pacific. The crew did not stay together. They escaped in three open whaleboats and tried to sail toward South America, where they hoped to reach land.

The attack and the open-boat voyage

According to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s catalog description of Owen Chase’s contemporary account, the three boats were separated by storms and darkness during the voyage. Two of the boats were eventually picked up after more than 90 days at sea, and the third was never found. The Town of Nantucket’s local history describes the same ordeal as three months of drifting, with hunger, exposure and cannibalism among the hardships the men faced.

The whale’s size is often described in dramatic terms, but no source consulted here establishes a verified length or mass for the animal. The NEA reader guide to the book gives differing descriptions, so treat any specific measurement you encounter as unverified.

How many survived

Survivor totals are the detail most likely to be repeated inaccurately. Chase’s account attributes twelve deaths to the open-boat journey. The Town of Nantucket says eight men were rescued in total. The University of Nebraska–Lincoln summary of Chase’s narrative describes two boats carrying five survivors when they were picked up. These figures describe different groupings of the men and the rescue, and the sources do not reconcile them in one place. The safest statement is that the crew of twenty was reduced to a small group of survivors after more than 90 days, and that the men who came home were changed by the experience.

Which accounts you can rely on

The sources for this story are not interchangeable. Some are firsthand, and some are later summaries or literary guides. The table below separates them by proximity to the event and by what each one is good for.

Source Date and type What it contributes Limits
Owen Chase’s narrative Dictated and published in 1821, only months after his return; firsthand The core chronology: the sinking, the three boats, the more than 90 days at sea One participant’s perspective, written shortly after the ordeal
Thomas Nickerson’s manuscript Later manuscript by the cabin boy; discovered in 1980 according to the NEA reader guide; not published in his lifetime Additional details, and some points that challenge Chase’s statements Written well after the events; where it conflicts with Chase, the disagreement remains contested
Town of Nantucket local history Modern local history summary Overview of the ordeal, the eight rescued men, and the cannibalism A secondary summary, not a primary text
NEA reader guide to the book Modern literary guide Book publication details, the film adaptation, and the Chase and Nickerson source relationship Not a scene-by-scene audit of the film
NOAA, Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument Monument account published 2015 The distinction between the real Essex events and Melville’s fictional whale; Pollard’s later voyage Focused on those topics, not the full survival narrative

When a detail appears in only one of these sources, or where Chase and Nickerson differ, present it as contested rather than as settled fact. Later dramatic reconstructions should be read as interpretation.

From the Essex to the book and the film

Philbrick’s nonfiction book

Nathaniel Philbrick published In the Heart of the Sea in 2000. The NEA reader guide identifies it as nonfiction and reports that it was on the New York Times bestseller list for 40 weeks. The guide does not state the year of that chart run. Philbrick’s book is the bridge between the old primary accounts and the modern public story, and it is the most direct way to read the narrative in a single volume.

The 2015 film

NOAA’s Papahānaumokuākea monument account describes the Warner Bros. movie as based on Philbrick’s book. The film tells the historical story with dramatic adaptation. Its survival scenes, dialogue and character moments are shaped for the screen, so separate the documented events (the ramming, the three boats, the long drift, the rescues) from any scene-specific claim about what happened on the boats. The sources consulted here establish the chain from event to account to book to film, but they do not check the film scene by scene.

Moby-Dick and the whale

Melville’s Moby-Dick drew on real whaling events and on his own experience at sea. NOAA identifies George Pollard’s Essex story as one inspiration for the novel. It is clear, however, that Moby Dick was not a real whale. The name is linked by NOAA to a real albino sperm whale called Mocha Dick, reported in a magazine story that Melville read in 1839.

The useful way to describe the connection is that the Essex was one source among several for the novel, not a literal template for every event in it. Read the novel as fiction that absorbed a real catastrophe, not as documentary.

Pollard’s later voyage and the Two Brothers wreck

The Papahānaumokuākea monument’s account continues the story past the Essex. Pollard later captained the whaleship Two Brothers, which struck a reef in 1823 in what is now the monument area. NOAA says the wreck site was discovered in 2008 and positively identified in 2011. This is the one part of the story that rests on a physical site rather than on written testimony alone.

Quotes from the author

Philbrick told the NEA: “If everything had gone right, they might’ve made it. Everything went wrong.” The NEA guide also reproduces a line from Philbrick’s website: “A survival tale peels away the niceties and comforts of civilization. Suddenly, all the technology and education in the world means nothing.” Because the NEA guide is the source for that second reproduction, check Philbrick’s original site before using it as a direct quotation in print.

Where to read more

  • Owen Chase’s 1821 narrative. The University of Nebraska–Lincoln hosts a public-domain facsimile online. This is the best primary text for the chronology.
  • Nathaniel Philbrick, In the Heart of the Sea (2000). The book that the 2015 film is based on, and a single-volume narrative of the event.
  • Herman Melville, Moby-Dick. Fiction that drew on the Essex disaster and on Melville’s own whaling experience. Read it as a novel, not as a record of events.
