Its English translation, Karan Ghelo: Gujarat’s Last Rajput King, appeared in 2015, translated by Tulsi Vatsal and Aban Mukherji. The story turns on a king’s abduction of a minister’s wife and the revenge that brings an attack on Gujarat—but it is a novel shaped from historical and literary traditions, not a verified account of every event it depicts.
What is Karan Ghelo about?
In the translators’ account, Karan is a brave but impulsive, pleasure-loving Rajput king. He abducts Roopsundari, the wife of his trusted minister Madhav; Madhav’s brother is killed trying to protect her. Madhav then travels to Delhi and persuades Sultan Alauddin Khilji to attack Gujarat. The narrative proceeds through revenge, conflict and the remembered fall of Patan.
The plot’s emotional chain—desire, injury, vengeance and its consequences—gives the novel its dramatic force. But its scenes and character motives belong to Mehta’s literary telling. They should not be treated as independently established historical facts. The translators’ account in Scroll describes the story in this historical and literary context.

That distinction matters: the English book makes Mehta’s 19th-century Gujarati novel accessible in translation; it is not a newly written historical study. Readers seeking the original encounter a work first published in Gujarati, while English readers encounter Vatsal and Mukherji’s translation.
How history and literary tradition shape the novel
The story draws on a wider body of accounts concerning Gujarat’s conquest and Patan’s fall. According to Vatsal and Mukherji, Mehta used bardic traditions, Jain chronicles, Persian texts, Gujarat folklore and material associated with Alexander Kinloch Forbes’s Rasmala, compiled with poet Dalpatram Dahyabhai.

Mehta also intended the book to portray the customs, ways of thinking and systems of government associated with the period of the story. The narrative includes substantial cultural and historical description, including passages on social customs and religious practice. These features help explain why the book is more than a chain of dramatic plot events, while its mixed sources and novel form mean it should not be read as a modern, source-verified chronicle.
What Mehta said he wanted to do
In the preface to the first edition, as reproduced by his translators, Mehta described an ambition to depict the manners and thinking of people in the story’s time, along with the political systems and ideals he associated with Rajput Gujarat and the Delhi sultanate. His language reflects the period and the author’s framing; it is evidence of his stated intention, not a present-day historian’s judgment.

“My intention in writing the book was to draw as accurately as possible a picture of how things were at the time of the story – the manners of the men and women of the time and their way of thinking; the principles of government of the Rajput kings of Gujarat and the Muslim emperors of Delhi; the heroism and the pride of caste of the men and women of Rajasthan, and the passion and the religious fanaticism of the Muslims.”
Mehta also explained that he was responding to a perceived lack of familiar prose stories in Gujarati and to encouragement from the province’s Educational Inspector, Mr Russell Sahib. He wrote that he completed the book in approximately three years. Both statements come from his preface as reproduced in the translators’ article.

Adaptations beyond the novel
Vatsal and Mukherji note that the story was adapted for Parsi theatre in 1868 and for a film in 1924. Those historical adaptations show the story’s life beyond the page; they do not establish that either production is currently available to watch.

Karan Ghelo brings together a forceful tale of personal grievance and political consequence with Mehta’s effort to render a past society in prose fiction. Penguin’s description of it as the first modern Gujarati novel situates the book in Gujarati literary history, while its 2015 English translation gives readers who do not read Gujarati another way into the work. Its value lies both in the story Mehta fashioned and in the cultural and literary record embodied by a 19th-century novel—not in treating the plot as a transparent historical transcript.
