India selected Neeraj Ghaywan’s Hindi-language film Homebound as its official entry for the 98th Academy Awards’ International Feature Film category. The film advanced to the Academy’s 15-film shortlist, but it was not nominated; Norway’s Sentimental Value won the award on March 15, 2026.
What Ghaywan said about the selection
After the Film Federation of India chose Homebound, director Neeraj Ghaywan said he was “deeply honoured” that the film had been selected. He described the chance to take Indian stories to an international audience as “both humbling and a matter of pride,” and said he was grateful to represent India on a major global cinema stage.
His remarks were about the film’s selection as India’s official entry. That national choice began the Oscar-category process; it did not mean the Academy had nominated the film.
What Homebound is about
Reporting describes Homebound as the story of Shoaib and Chandan, two friends who hope to join the police force while confronting discrimination connected to religion and caste. Ishaan Khatter plays Shoaib, Vishal Jethwa plays Chandan, and Janhvi Kapoor is also among the film’s stars. Ghaywan directed the film.

How India’s selection, the shortlist and the Oscar result differ
The process had distinct stages: India selected its submission, the Academy shortlisted eligible films, and the Academy then named five nominees. The award went to one of those nominees at the ceremony.

What “represented India” means here
In this context, “represented India” means that the Film Federation of India chose Homebound as the country’s official submission for the category. The phrase does not mean the film was a finalist, one of the five Oscar nominees, or the winner. It reached the Academy shortlist before its run ended at the nomination stage.
