Ghoti and Bangal are regional and social labels associated, broadly, with western and eastern Bengali origins. The distinction did not begin with Partition: older regional differences, migration to Calcutta, and colonial-era stereotypes predated 1947. Partition and refugee displacement sharpened the divide, while dialect, food, customs, and status became everyday ways of expressing belonging. The labels are not fixed categories for every Bengali, and the available evidence does not establish how widespread or consequential they are today.
What do “Ghoti” and “Bangal” mean?
In common usage, “Ghoti” is associated with western Bengal and “Bangal” with eastern Bengal, now largely Bangladesh. These terms can signal family origin and migration history, but also carry social meaning that changes with the speaker and setting. They are not exhaustive identities: Bengali-speaking communities have varied histories, and no household or individual can be reliably described by a label alone.
Subhasri Ghosh’s 2023 account in Scroll.in describes east and west as ideas in Bengali consciousness before their political separation after 1947. The Ganges could serve as a symbolic boundary, framing difference as “this side” and “that side.” Food, customs, rituals, and dialect offered visible markers for that distinction.
How did the distinction take shape before Partition?
Migration and status in colonial Calcutta
Migration from East Bengal to Calcutta for education and employment was underway well before Partition. Ghosh describes middle-class East Bengali Hindus making the city a temporary home from the second half of the nineteenth century. The account also recalls local derision of migrants, including a demeaning rhyme remembered by R. N. Sen. This is evidence that migration and prejudice predated 1947, not proof that all arrivals had the same background or experience.

A historical analysis of the late-nineteenth-century play Sadhabar Ekadashi traces Bangal–Kolkattai stereotypes in colonial literary culture. It reads them through a contrast between modern or high culture and rustic or popular culture. A play can show that such stereotypes circulated in representation; it cannot stand in for the lived experience of every community. See Ritriban Chakraborty’s analysis.
What did Partition change?
Partition turned an older regional distinction into a sharper question of displacement, resources, and reception. Many East Bengali Hindus crossed into West Bengal after 1947. Ghosh’s account describes a host population facing economic and fiscal pressure and records political language that cast refugees as outsiders or economic liabilities. Those statements show how refugees were discussed; they should not be treated as evidence that refugees caused the hardships attributed to them.

The following figures are reported in Ghosh’s 2023 Scroll.in excerpt, which draws on a book chapter; they are not independently verified here against primary statistical records.
| Measure | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| West Bengal’s area after Partition | 36.4% of the parent province’s area | Reported by Subhasri Ghosh, Scroll.in, 2023. |
| Average population density | Calcutta: around 88,953 people per square mile in 1951; undivided Bengal: 751.2 per square mile in 1941 | Different places and years, as reported by Subhasri Ghosh, Scroll.in, 2023. |
| Rice production and stated requirement | 3.2 million tons produced in 1949 against a stated requirement of 3.6 million tons | Reported by Subhasri Ghosh, Scroll.in, 2023. |
| West Bengal’s share of income-tax receipts | Reported as reduced from 20% to 12% in March 1948, with the amount falling from Rs 6 crore to Rs 3.5 crore | Reported by Subhasri Ghosh, Scroll.in, 2023. |
Ghosh also reports that West Bengal Premier B. C. Roy claimed the state had a two-million-ton deficit of rice and cereals. That is a political statement recorded in the account, distinct from its separate production and requirement estimates.

How did culture keep the divide legible?
Food as memory and identity
Food can make regional identity tangible, but familiar contrasts are shorthand rather than household rules. A 2026 article by Sen, Sarkar, and Ghosh in the Loreto College Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences discusses ilish bhapa and chingri malaikari, as well as poppy seed and chili, as examples associated with Ghoti–Bangal rivalry. Its argument is that recipes and seasonal food practices carried memory for displaced Bengalis after Partition and the events of 1971, and that Kolkata markets adopted eastern ingredients over time. These are the authors’ interpretive examples, not a definitive list of what every family eats. The journal abstract is available at the article page.
Dialect, belonging, and prestige
Dialect can mark difference while also reflecting unequal judgments about whose speech sounds prestigious or local. A 2026 study by Bridget Teresa Joseph in the South Asian Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities reports a constructivist ethnographic project involving 200 semi-structured interviews—100 Ghoti and 100 Bangal—about 150 hours of participant observation in West Bengal and Bangladesh, and textual analysis. Its abstract says “Calcutta Bangla” functions as linguistic capital, while eastern dialects are devalued through ridicule; it also describes migration stigma shaping some claims of local belonging.

The study concerns Bengali Muslims and should be read within that scope. It does not establish the prevalence or meaning of the divide across all Bengalis, nor does a shared language or religion by itself erase internal distinctions. See Joseph’s study.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the divide still pervasive today?
The available evidence supports a history of regional distinction, stereotypes, displacement, and cultural memory, but it does not establish how widespread or consequential Ghoti–Bangal identity is today across Bengali communities. A focused study of dialect hierarchy among Bengali Muslims in West Bengal cannot answer that broader question for everyone. It is more accurate to treat the labels as context-dependent identities than to claim either that the divide remains pervasive everywhere or that it has disappeared.

Further historical context
For the broader political setting of colonial Bengal, Semanti Ghosh’s Different Nationalisms: Bengal, 1905–1947 examines competing ideas of nationhood; it is relevant context, not a direct history of the Ghoti–Bangal distinction.
