Translator Tridip Suhrud said he translated Govardhanram Tripathi’s Saraswatichandra because, as he put it in a 2015 interview, “for 128 years we in Gujarat had not done so.” He also wanted Gujarati’s most important literary work, in his view, to reach more readers. The novel’s scale and subject matter help explain why the project was significant: it is not only a love story, but a wide-ranging account of social and political life.
What is Saraswatichandra about?
Scroll.in’s 2015 account describes Tripathi’s Gujarati novel as a four-volume work of roughly 1,700 pages, written over 14 years beginning in 1885. Those figures belong to the interview’s description; page counts can vary by edition.
The novel includes the relationship between Saraswatichandra and Kumud, but Suhrud cautioned against treating that romance as the whole work. The interview also foregrounds changing society, family structures, power, religion, widow remarriage and political life. Its scope is part of what makes the novel difficult to reduce to a single plot summary.
Why did Tridip Suhrud translate it?
Asked what motivated him, Suhrud answered: “I translated it because for 128 years we in Gujarat had not done so.” The 128-year figure is his account of the absence of an English translation, quoted in Rajiv Shah’s Scroll.in interview published on 8 October 2015; it should not be read as an independently verified count of every translation or edition.

Suhrud’s other stated motivation was cultural: he believed Gujarati’s most important literary work deserved to be shared beyond readers of Gujarati. In that sense, the translation was both a literary undertaking and an effort to make a major regional-language novel accessible to a wider audience.
What made the translation challenging?
Suhrud described Tripathi’s Gujarati as markedly different from modern Gujarati and strongly Sanskrit-based. He also said the novel incorporates extensive Sanskrit quotations and passages of English Romantic poetry. In his account, translating it meant working through all three registers rather than simply transferring the plot into English.

These are the translator’s descriptions of the language and his process. The interview does not provide an independent assessment of the translation’s accuracy or a line-by-line account of his choices.
Why is the novel more than a love story?
Suhrud contrasted the novel’s broader concerns with the familiar tendency to approach it chiefly through its romance, a framing reinforced by screen adaptations. The interview characterizes the 1968 film primarily as a love story, while saying a later television serial tried to make the work contemporary. It does not offer enough detail for a scene-by-scene comparison.

The difference matters because a four-volume novel can give space to questions that a romance-centered adaptation may leave at the margins: how families and social institutions change, how power operates, and how religious and political life shape personal choices. Suhrud’s point was not that the love story is absent, but that it cannot stand in for the entire book.

By October 2015, the first English volume, Buddhidhan’s Administration, translated by Suhrud, had appeared. The article identified Orient BlackSwan in connection with the volumes and said the remaining three were expected over the following year and a half. That was a schedule reported at the time, not confirmation of present-day publication, edition or stock status.
