The gallery also identified returning characters Carol and Nancy, though its suggestion that they could complicate Pete and Alberta’s relationship was a tease, not a confirmed outcome.
What the Season 5 photos revealed
TV Insider published the first-look gallery on August 25, 2025, showing scenes and characters from “Soul Custody,” the Season 5 premiere. The episode aired October 16, 2025. The images offered a preview of the premiere’s characters and story hooks, rather than proof of how those stories would resolve.

The central supernatural problem was Jay’s deal with Elias Woodstone, played by Matt Walsh. TV Insider’s preview said Sam, Jay, and the ghosts would try to get Jay out of the agreement; CBS’s official episode synopsis also identifies the deal as the episode’s main setup. CBS’s episode guide provides the official synopsis and episode information.
Which returning characters appeared?
The gallery identifies Caroline Aaron as Carol, Pete’s ex-wife, and Betsy Sodaro as Nancy, the cholera ghost. It also features Elias and images of Alberta, Pete, Isaac, Patience, Sasappis, and Thorfinn.
#1 Best Overall
Carol and Nancy’s presence raises the possibility of complications for Pete and Alberta, whose relationship is already unsettled by their kiss. But the gallery’s captions pose that possibility as a question; they do not confirm that either character disrupts the romance or establish what ultimately happens between Pete and Alberta.
What other premiere storylines were teased?
Pete and Alberta face the kiss’s aftermath
The CBS synopsis confirms that Pete and Alberta are navigating what follows their kiss. The photos place their relationship alongside the returning characters, but do not settle its direction.
Rank #2
Isaac tries to help Patience
The premiere also has Isaac helping Patience through a crisis of confidence, adding a separate character-focused thread to the episode’s supernatural and romantic tensions.

Season 5 is no longer upcoming: CBS’s episode guide lists 22 episodes, ending with the two-part finale, “Up the Creek” and “Across The Pond,” dated May 21, 2026. Those later episodes establish the season’s completed run, but they are not part of what the premiere photos themselves revealed.
