Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is a messy, lore-heavy sequel that plays better as a goofy return to Freddy Fazbear’s world than as a coherent horror movie. Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, and Piper Rubio return, with Abby’s attempt to reconnect with the animatronics drawing Mike and Vanessa into new danger. Fans may find the atmosphere, characters, and franchise callbacks entertaining; viewers seeking sustained scares or a story that stands on its own may be frustrated.
What is Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 about?
Emma Tammi returns to direct this 2025 sequel to the 2023 film adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s game series, and Cawthon wrote the screenplay. After the first film’s events, Abby (Piper Rubio) tries to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy. Her decision pulls Mike (Josh Hutcherson) and Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) back into danger and into further secrets surrounding Freddy Fazbear’s.
The setup gives the sequel a personal anchor in Abby’s attachment to the animatronics, but it also draws on the franchise’s mythology. How well that balance works depends partly on how much of the games and first film a viewer brings with them.
Does the sequel work better than the first film?
As an entertaining franchise return, it can feel livelier and sillier than its predecessor. The animatronics remain the main attraction, and the film gives fans more of the characters and atmosphere they came to see. Its earnest, sometimes goofy tone can make the experience easier to enjoy as a spectacle than as a tightly constructed horror story.

The trade-off is coherence. In the Associated Press review, Mark Kennedy argues that the sequel relies on prior knowledge and loses narrative focus. Viewers who remember the first movie or follow the games may be more comfortable with the references and expanding mythology; newcomers have less to hold onto when the plot moves between its mysteries and character threads.
Is it scary?
The scares are uneven. Kennedy’s AP review says the bow-tie-wearing, big-eyed animatronics are “decidedly nonfrightening,” but singles out the Marionette as a genuinely unsettling presence. He describes its rosy-cheeked mask and elongated arms as especially effective. That contrast captures the movie’s horror problem: one creature may land as disturbing while the broader tone and familiar mascots keep the film from sustaining dread.

The AP’s verdict is blunt: Kennedy writes that the film has “no real horror and no real awareness that it should.” That is a critic’s judgment, not a guarantee of how every viewer will react. The audience consensus shown by Rotten Tomatoes, by contrast, praises scares alongside atmosphere and fan service.
How have critics and audiences received it?
Reception is sharply divided. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 17% Tomatometer from 132 reviews and an 82% Popcornmeter from more than 5,000 verified ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. Those figures are platform aggregates, not a representative audience study, and the live scores can change.

The contrast reflects different expectations: critical response has focused on the story’s incoherence and weak horror, while Rotten Tomatoes’ audience consensus emphasizes the franchise elements, atmosphere, and scares that fans enjoy. The page also quotes FilmWeek (LAist) critic Tim Cogshell, who wrote on December 31, 2025, “This film works — it’s better than the first film, actually.” Individual audience reviews include both enthusiasm for franchise fans and doubts about how enjoyable it would be without familiarity; such comments are personal reactions, not a poll.
Who is this sequel for?
- Franchise fans: The animatronics, atmosphere, and additional lore offer reasons to return, and the sillier tone may make the film an enjoyable watch even when its plot gets tangled.
- Viewers who want a self-contained story: The dependence on prior knowledge may make the sequel hard to follow if you have not seen the first film or followed the games.
- Horror-first viewers: The Marionette may provide an unsettling highlight, but the film does not maintain a consistently frightening mood.
- Families considering a watch: The Associated Press lists the US rating as PG-13 for violent content, terror, and some language. That rating is a US classification, not a universal age recommendation.
How long is it, and where can you watch it?
The Associated Press lists the theatrical runtime as 104 minutes. Universal’s home-video technical sheet gives slightly different format runtimes: 1:43:57 for 4K UHD and Blu-ray, and 1:44:03 for DVD. Universal says the film became available to buy or rent on digital platforms on December 23, 2025, followed by 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on February 17, 2026. Its listed 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray edition and DVD are among the home-video formats; the page also lists a two-film collection.

Universal describes approximately 43 minutes of bonus features, covering cast interviews, production design, and the work of bringing the animatronics to life, including Mangle and the Marionette. Peacock announced a US streaming debut for April 3, 2026. That announcement does not establish availability in other countries, so check the service’s local listing for current access.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is easiest to recommend to viewers who already enjoy the franchise and are happy to trade story clarity and sustained scares for animatronic spectacle, fan service, and a goofier tone. It can be more fun than its predecessor without being a more successful horror film. For everyone else, the Marionette is a striking exception in a sequel whose lore and uneven scares may not be enough to make the return worthwhile.
