In the Season 8 Episode 2 preview, Maggie Bell is playing chess with Peter, a retired Behavioral Analysis Unit profiler played by Zach Grenier, when a report of a deadly art theft interrupts the game. The episode is titled “Captured,” and it aired on October 20, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET. Collider published the exclusive preview on October 16, 2025, so it appeared four days before the broadcast.
Who Maggie is playing chess with
Peter is a retired BAU profiler, and the preview frames his visit with Maggie as a personal scene rather than a case briefing. The two are mid-game when the call comes in. Collider’s preview, written by Ryan O’Rourke, presents the chess match as the quiet opening that the case then cuts short.
The heist at the Rushman gallery
The interruption is a report of a heist at the Rushman gallery. According to the preview, the case centers on a high-profile art theft connected to an international cultural exchange. The stakes are concrete:
- A security guard is dead.
- Five paintings on loan from European allies are missing.
Maggie, OA, and the team take the case. The preview gives Peter one notable observation: the guard’s death may not have been part of the thieves’ plan. That line suggests he could be useful to the profiling side of the investigation. It does not show him formally joining the team, so treat any claim of an official role as unconfirmed until you see the episode.

Why the case lands harder after the premiere
The preview follows a traumatic Season 8 premiere. According to Collider’s account, Isobel Castille survived a brain bleed and an emergency craniotomy. Scola’s new partner, Dani Rhodes, was killed while trying to rescue Maggie and OA. Episode 2 therefore opens with the team still absorbing those losses.
Showrunner Mike Weiss addressed the aftermath in a statement that Collider reproduced in the preview:
“Losing a partner is always a tough thing. And Scola is going to be feeling the loss of Dani for a while. But Scola joined the FBI after the loss of his brother. He’s a character who finds ways to grow and honor everyone he’s lost in his daily life as an agent. It’s what makes him an extraordinary asset to the team.”
