Emily in Paris Season 5 gives Emily a larger presence in Rome and takes the story through Venice and a fictional Italian village, but the change of scenery does not amount to a comparable change in the series’ storytelling. In the assessment advanced here, the season’s polished Italian backdrop and fashion provide fresh pleasures while familiar career reversals, romantic indecision and character stasis keep it from feeling like a meaningful new chapter. That is a critical judgment, not a verdict every viewer will share.

Does Emily move to Rome in Season 5?

Yes, though Rome does not replace Paris. After opening an Agence Grateau office there in the Season 4 setup, Emily arrives to lead the Italian branch. Creator Darren Star described the premise as “This season is a tale of two cities: Rome and Paris,” and said, “Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome. It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris.” The season also visits Venice and the fictional Italian village of Solitano before the agency team returns to Paris. Netflix Tudum’s Season 5 introduction outlines that setting shift.

What happens? Spoilers ahead

Emily leads Agence Grateau’s Italian branch while continuing her relationship with Marcello. Her unresolved connection with Gabriel remains part of the story, so the move to Italy does not close the romantic question that has followed the series. The season runs for 10 episodes, according to TIME’s finale explainer. In the finale, Emily and Marcello say “I love you,” but the Emily-Gabriel question remains open rather than receiving a definitive resolution.

Does the Italian setting change the show?

It changes the look more decisively than the dramatic engine. Rome, Venice and the Italian village give the season new locations and a distinct visual palette; the central pattern of workplace upheaval and romantic uncertainty still feels familiar. That contrast is the heart of the season’s mixed appeal: the series can make a fresh setting inviting without making Emily’s choices feel substantially different.

Netflix Tudum’s style feature, presented by Peroni, offers useful context for the visual ambitions but is promotional rather than independent criticism. Star says Emily is “loosening up a little, and her style’s evolving and getting more sophisticated.” Costume designer Marylin Fitoussi describes the season’s approach as “reimagining the iconic silhouettes of Italian cinema.” Those remarks explain the intended fashion language; they do not, on their own, establish that the storytelling has evolved.

Where critics see the same mistakes

Career moves that do not feel like progress

In her December 18, 2025 review for TechRadar, streaming staff writer Jasmine Valentine argues that the Rome move and the workplace decisions around it undo Emily’s career progress instead of building on it. The complaint is not simply that Emily faces setbacks; setbacks can create drama. It is that the season’s professional turns make development feel reversible, leaving the relocation more like a reset than the next stage of her career. Valentine’s review makes that case.

Romantic indecision remains in play

Valentine also objects to how the season handles Marcello and its continuing Emily-Gabriel setup. TIME’s account of the finale confirms the structural point: Emily and Marcello declare their love, but the question of Emily and Gabriel is not settled. For viewers invested in romantic tension, that openness may be part of the appeal; for those waiting for the relationships to produce lasting choices, it can feel like another postponement.

Character stasis versus comfort-watch pleasure

Audrey Fournier’s December 20, 2025 review in Le Monde identifies recurring character stasis as a risk to the show’s long-term appeal, contrasting the promise of serialized storytelling—characters changing over time—with the repetition she sees here. Her critique is compatible with the season’s strengths: the cast, fashion and fantasy of European leisure can still make for an enjoyable watch even when the characters do not move forward enough. Neither review establishes how every viewer will respond. Fournier’s review frames the tension between repetition and the show’s appeal.

Is Season 5 worth watching?

It depends on what you want from the series. If the draw is the cast, polished European settings, wardrobe and ongoing relationship drama, the Italian chapters offer enough atmosphere to make the season an appealing comfort watch. If you want the Rome move to lead to decisive career growth or a sustained change in Emily’s romantic and personal patterns, the critical objections are worth taking seriously: the location changes, but the season may not feel like a corresponding leap in character development.
