He had two reasons: Sara was the only surviving witness to an Afghanistan ambush that could expose his involvement, and her son gave him a way to control her and make her look like the guilty party. Josh is found alive in the consulate, Kynch and Sergeant Donovan are arrested, and Sara is reunited with her son.
Who is behind the kidnapping
Exterritorial is a German action thriller written and directed by Christian Zübert. Netflix announced a worldwide streaming release on April 30, 2025. Jeanne Goursaud plays Sara Wulf, a former Special Forces soldier who visits the US Consulate in Frankfurt with her son Joshua, called Josh. Netflix’s official synopsis establishes the premise: Josh disappears, consulate staff insist he was never there, and Sara begins searching the building. The detailed account of who planned the disappearance and why comes from The Review Geek’s independent recap of the ending.
| Character | Actor (per Netflix cast listing) | Role in the ending |
|---|---|---|
| Sara Wulf | Jeanne Goursaud | Former Special Forces soldier, the surviving witness to the Afghanistan ambush |
| Eric Kynch | Dougray Scott | Consulate regional security officer; arranged Josh’s kidnapping |
| Joshua “Josh” Wulf | Rickson Guy da Silva | Sara’s son; found alive in a hidden storage room |
| Irina (also known as Kira Wolkowa) | Lera Abova | Helps Sara investigate the consulate |
| Sergeant Donovan | Kayode Akinyemi | Arrested alongside Kynch |
| Deborah Allen | Annabelle Mandeng | Takes over the consulate after the arrests, according to the recap |
Why Kynch wanted Sara silenced
The motive is tied to the Afghanistan ambush. According to The Review Geek, Sara’s investigation turns up evidence linking Kynch to that attack, including information from a journalist and evidence of Kynch meeting a Taliban member. The ambush killed Sara’s partner, Evan, and other soldiers. Sara survived, which made her the one person who could identify Kynch.
The recap says the plan went further than hiding Josh. Kynch had arranged Sara’s job opportunity at the consulate and expected her to be controllable. If she was discredited as unstable or dangerous, anything she said about the ambush would carry less weight. That is why the kidnapping works as both a threat and a frame.

How the ending unfolds
- Josh’s disappearance is denied. Consulate staff deny he was ever there, and the records appear to show Sara alone. The film keeps viewers uncertain about whether Sara’s trauma is distorting what she sees.
- Sara teams up with Irina. Together they investigate the consulate. The recap says Sara’s earlier discovery of a drug handoff, and her work with a technical contact, gives them a way into hidden records and camera feeds.
- The ambush connection surfaces. The evidence about Kynch and the Taliban member ties him to the attack that killed Evan and the other soldiers.
- The plan starts to fail. Events inside the consulate move beyond Kynch’s control.
- Sara uses Aileen as leverage. Kynch’s daughter becomes part of the confrontation. Sara records Kynch’s explanation on a toy belonging to Aileen. Kynch shoots Sara and tries to make it look as though she was the aggressor, but the recording preserves his confession.
- Arrests and rescue. Kynch and Donovan are arrested, Deborah Allen takes over the consulate, and Josh is found safe in a hidden storage room. Sara is reunited with him.
Where Sara’s suspicion was right
The early denials make it easy to wonder whether Josh was ever real in Sara’s world. The ending settles that question: he was not imagined, and he was hidden inside the consulate. The uncertainty is a storytelling device that makes the investigation harder, not a sign that the kidnapping was a hallucination.
The helicopter image: plot fact versus interpretation
The film returns to Sara’s Afghanistan trauma through helicopter imagery near the close. Plot Explained reads the final helicopter moment as a sign that Sara is moving forward and has overcome the trigger. That is an interpretation. No director or cast member commenting on this symbol was found in the sources reviewed, so it should not be treated as confirmed creator intent. It also should not be taken as a clinical claim. The film resolves the practical mystery, but it does not show that Sara is medically cured of PTSD.
