What happened aboard the F/V Wizard?
The emergency unfolded during the 2024 fishing season. TV Insider’s October 3, 2024 report said Colburn collapsed in the wheelhouse after an argument with his brother, Monte “Mouse” Colburn. He later described numbness on his left side and said he could not feel his arm.

Parade’s October 2, 2024 account described Colburn sitting in the galley and struggling to breathe normally. He said, “My left side’s…numb,” and, “I can’t feel my arm.” TV Insider also reproduced his line, “I can’t feel my arm… I’m scared.”
Monte received medical guidance over the vessel’s communications and navigated toward Saint Paul Harbor. Colburn was taken ashore and then medevaced for treatment. Parade reported on October 9 that he had been hospitalized in Anchorage after losing consciousness multiple times at sea.

What was known about the cause in October 2024?
The first reports did not establish a diagnosis. In its October 9, 2024 health update, Parade said the initial workup had not determined the cause. A heart attack had not been entirely ruled out, while a TIA was mentioned as one possibility. That was an account of the uncertainty at the time, not a confirmed diagnosis.
When did Colburn say he had a TIA?
Parade’s August 7, 2025 report said that during the Season 21 premiere, Colburn told viewers his medical team had determined he had experienced a TIA. The diagnosis is reported here as Colburn’s account on the show; the coverage does not provide an independent medical record or a case-specific statement from a clinician.
In the same account, Colburn said, “I have to minimize my stress this year,” and, “I’m not flying out on a plane again.” These remarks describe his stated approach after the emergency, rather than a broader medical assessment.
