Pixar’s 2025 animated film offers an imaginative alien world and a sincere story about connection, though its familiar plotting may not surprise adults. For families, the key consideration is that grief and peril sit beneath the comedy and cosmic spectacle.
What is Elio about?
Elio is an 11-year-old space enthusiast who is transported to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization, and mistaken for Earth’s leader or ambassador. As he encounters alien lifeforms and an intergalactic crisis, he has to make connections and figure out where he belongs. Director Madeline Sharafian described the journey from Elio’s perspective as “more of a rescue than an abduction.”

The setting promises the scale and visual play of a space odyssey, but the story’s emotional starting point is close to home: Elio’s loneliness. Director Domee Shi described him as a boy “running away from loneliness on earth.” That gives the alien encounters a personal purpose beyond simply moving the plot from one strange planet to another.
Is Elio appropriate for kids?
The film is rated PG for “thematic elements, some action and peril,” according to the Associated Press review. Elio has recently lost his parents, so bereavement is part of the premise, not a passing detail. The colorful adventure also includes tense moments and danger. A child who is sensitive to parental loss, separation, or suspense may find parts of the film heavier than its comic science-fiction look suggests.
#1 Best Overall
- In this fun-filled, action-packed cosmic misadventure, Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination, is beamed up to an interplanetary organization with members from galaxies far and wide. Mistaken for Earth?s leader, Elio must form bonds with alien life-forms, navigate an intergalactic crisis, and discover who and where he?s truly meant to be.
Those elements do not produce one universal age cutoff: children respond differently to grief and peril, and parents know best how their child handles those themes. The film’s humor and alien friendships provide a counterweight, but they do not erase the emotional weight of its setup.
Does the story work for adults as well as children?
The themes of connection, identity, and belonging give the adventure a clear emotional center. Zoe Saldaña has framed self-acceptance and belonging as important takeaways, while the filmmakers have spoken about the film’s science-fiction influences. Shi called it “a love letter to the sci-fi movies we grew up with” with the creators’ own spin on the genre.
Rank #2
- For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers - in Disney and Pixar's all-new feature film Elio, the universe calls back!
That sincerity is also where the film faces its main critical test: whether its relationships and plot earn the feelings they aim for. AP critic Lindsey Bahr found the premise emotionally potent but the storytelling safe and familiar. The result may work best for viewers drawn to an earnest family adventure rather than a story built around unexpected turns. Its Communiverse and the friendship at the heart of the journey offer imaginative appeal; the narrative framework may feel recognizable to adults familiar with animated coming-of-age stories.
Who made the film, and who voices the characters?
Elio was directed by Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina, and produced by Mary Alice Drumm. Disney lists these principal voice roles:
