Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle (2024) asks viewers to enjoy a knowingly silly spy caper in which a novelist’s invented plots begin to bleed into real espionage. The verdict in the headline is harsh, and this review treats it as an editorial judgment rather than a measured fact. The strongest case against the film is not that it is unwatchable. It is that its twists and runtime keep piling up until the joke stops paying off, while the cast works hard to keep the material afloat.
What the film is
Universal Pictures distributed Argylle, which Vaughn directed and produced from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs. Universal’s official trailer, published September 28, 2023, gives the theatrical opening as February 2, 2024. Bryce Dallas Howard plays Elly Conway, a reclusive novelist. Sam Rockwell plays Aiden, and Henry Cavill plays Argylle, the fictional secret agent at the center of her books. The trailer also names John Cena, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Sofia Boutella, Ariana DeBose, Catherine O’Hara and Samuel L. Jackson in the ensemble.
The setup is meta-fictional. A novelist and her cat are drawn into espionage as the boundary between her invented stories and reality blurs. This review does not describe the later turns.
The promotional campaign built a small mystery around the title character. The Associated Press review records two questions the film’s marketing put to audiences: “Who is the ‘real’ Agent Argylle?” and “Why two L’s?” The second is a light detail, not a theme the film develops.

The case for a knowingly silly premise
The film’s best argument is its willingness to be ridiculous on purpose. A spy story that pokes at its own genre can be a pleasure if the audience is in on the joke. That is the premise a viewer has to buy before anything else works.
Jake Coyle’s review for the Associated Press, published January 31, 2024, is the most pointed critique of that premise. He calls the film “a tiresome meta movie” and writes: “Criss-crossing patterns of ridiculousness and self-satisfaction run through ‘Argylle,’ a tiresome meta movie that puts an awful lot of zest into an awfully empty high-concept story.” That sentence is the reviewer’s judgment, but it names the central tension clearly: the film has plenty of energy and very little underneath it.

In practical terms, meta-comedy depends on the audience enjoying the self-awareness. If you like spy pastiche and do not mind the jokes winking at you, the premise is an asset. If the winking becomes the whole film, the premise turns into the problem.
Where the case against it holds
Plotting that keeps turning
The most common objection is structural. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus on the film’s review page says Argylle “gets some mileage out of its silly, energetic spin on the spy thriller, but ultimately wears out its welcome with a convoluted plot and overlong runtime.” Coyle makes a related complaint about the film’s repeated switcheroos.

My reading is that each reveal reframes the one before it. Instead of following a story, the viewer is asked to keep re-sorting what they have already been told. That can be playful for a while, but it works against the investment a spy thriller needs.
Runtime
The consensus is explicit that the film overstays. For a comedy that relies on escalating absurdity, length matters, because each new twist has less room to land. The complaint is not about any single scene so much as the cumulative effect of the film running longer than its central joke can sustain.

Comedy and its repetition
Coyle’s critique targets the comedy itself as well as the plot. A film built around switcheroos depends on surprise, and surprise is hard to repeat. When the reveals start to feel like variations on one move, the humor loses its snap.

The strongest defense of the film is the cast. Coyle writes that “It’s a testament to Howard’s charm that ‘Argylle’ is watchable, at all, and Rockwell, too, elevates the material.” That is a critic’s judgment, but it matches the central practical question: if the performers can carry you through the slack stretches, the film has a reason to exist. Howard’s role as the reclusive novelist gives the film its emotional anchor, and Rockwell provides a counterweight that keeps the tone from collapsing into pure noise.

Stylized action and the director’s signature
Coyle also notes Vaughn’s fondness for stylized, slow-motion violence. Whether that stylization is a pleasure or a distraction depends on how much you enjoy the director’s broader approach. A viewer who likes the flourish will find it part of the fun. A viewer who finds it self-indulgent will read it as one more reason the film feels overlong. The sourced critical discussion frames this as a matter of taste, and this review does too.
