Scroll.in’s November 5, 2018 feature presents eight poems from Mustansir Dalvi’s collection Cosmopolitician, published by Poetrywala. The excerpts appeared with permission from the book; they are not eight poems newly written for the feature. Although the original headline called it a “new book,” that description belongs to 2018.
What the Scroll feature includes
The feature presents these poems in this order: “The hospice for malnourished poets,” “Kintsukuroi,” “Traumstadt,” “Last day in a lived-in house,” “1969, July,” “Judgments in carpets,” “Vertigo,” and “Parshuram.” Read the Scroll.in feature for the excerpts themselves.
Across the selection, the poems move among built spaces, city and landscape, literary and cultural allusions, grief, mythology, humor, and political unease. Those are threads a reader can follow, rather than a single definitive explanation of the collection.
How the poems approach place and experience
Architecture, rooms, and the city
Architecture and built space offer one way into poems such as “The hospice for malnourished poets” and “Traumstadt.” Domestic interiors and urban settings can shape how a poem moves through memory or thought, rather than simply serving as backdrops.

Private feeling and public unease
“Last day in a lived-in house” and “1969, July” bring the reader toward personal and historical registers, while other poems make room for humor, myth, or political satire. The variety matters: the eight excerpts do not reduce to one mood or subject.
Allusion alongside everyday speech
References such as Ghalib sit within a collection that also attends to ordinary spaces and experiences. The shifts between cultural reference, direct speech, and changing poetic forms are part of what makes the sequence varied.

Where the eight poems fit in the collection
Dalvi’s official biography lists Cosmopolitician as a 2018 poetry book, alongside brouhahas of cocks (2013) and Walk (2022). His work also includes translation, and he is an architect and professor. See Mustansir Dalvi’s official biography and book list.
A 2019 review by Maithreyi Karnoor describes Cosmopolitician as a book of 66 poems arranged in seven sections, and discusses its urban imagination and movement among domestic, historical, interpersonal, and city subjects. That count and framing come from the review, rather than the 2018 excerpt feature. Read Karnoor’s review in Scroll.in.
