As described in a 2024 review by the Journal of the United Service Institution of India, its three parts and ten chapters span from the First World War to the November 2008 Mumbai attacks. It is narrative history focused on individual lives, not a comprehensive survey of every Indian conflict or military service.
What the book covers
The collection moves across different periods and theaters, using individual accounts to explore courage, resilience, family experience and military camaraderie. The USI journal review describes its overall span as more than a century, from World War I to the 26 November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
Scroll’s review gives examples of the stories rather than a complete contents list. It discusses Lance Daffadar Gobind Singh’s First World War service; aviators Indra Lal “Laddie” Roy and Hardit Singh Malik; and World War II soldier Chanan Singh Dhillon, including his captivity and attempts to escape. The reviewer also discusses Colonel Chhewang Rinchen, Colonel Haripal Kaushik, 1971 air combat, Kargil, counterinsurgency operations and the 2008 attacks. Those are descriptions of selected contents in the review, not an exhaustive list of the book’s chapters.
How it is organized and told
The Journal of the United Service Institution of India’s 2024 review identifies three parts and ten chapters. The book’s emphasis, as the reviews describe it, is on people and their experiences rather than a continuous operational history. The Week reported that DasGupta gathered stories through interviews with 40 sources over more than 400 hours of discussions; those figures are reported by that publication, not independently audited.

In his Scroll review, military historian and author Air Vice Marshal Arjun Subramaniam (Retd) called it “a fine anthology written with the deft touch of a practitioner and the flair of a consummate storyteller.” His assessment reflects the review’s favorable view of the book’s storytelling.
What kind of military history it offers
Camouflaged is best understood as a collection of selected personal narratives. The examples discussed by Scroll include Army and Air Force accounts, but the reviewer observes that a Navy story would have added a tri-service perspective. Readers looking for a systematic account of a particular campaign, a complete service history or a balanced survey of every conflict should treat this as a complement to those works, not a substitute.
