It names Hannah Dodd as Francesca Stirling and Masali Baduza as Michaela Stirling, and it says Season 5 is in production outside London. Netflix confirmed Season 5 at the same time as Season 6. The announcement gives a release year of 2027 but no premiere date, so treat 2027 as an expected year rather than a scheduled release.
What Season 5 is about
According to the same Netflix announcement, the story picks up two years after John Stirling’s death. The core setup is built around practical choices and emotional complications:
- Francesca’s plan: she intends to re-enter the marriage mart for practical reasons.
- Michaela’s return: she comes back to London to look after the Kilmartin estate.
- The complication: Francesca’s feelings for Michaela challenge the pragmatic plan she has set for herself.

Showrunner Jess Brownell addressed the season in Netflix’s October 1, 2026 announcement. She said: “But to make an entire Bridgerton season about a sapphic relationship feels huge.” She added: “It’s going to be a season about queer joy. It’s not going to be a season about queer trauma. We’re having so much fun!” On tone, she said: “If there’s anything really specific about this season, it’s the yearning. It’s big-time yearning,”

In a Shondaland interview published June 26, 2026, Brownell said: “We knew on this show that we wanted to give Fran and Michaela a happy ending, and they certainly do get one.”
Where Eloise stands
Netflix’s recap of Season 4 gives Eloise a continuing storyline. In it, she begins to accept that cynicism may not always be the answer, encourages Hyacinth to keep her romantic hopes, and urges Posy Li to follow her heart. She also starts to notice that people close to her have coupled up. That thread shows where Eloise’s arc stands, but it is not a season announcement. The Season 5 announcement names Francesca and Michaela, and nothing official yet names the season that will center Eloise.

Netflix says the Francesca and Michaela storyline is inspired by Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked. The book is a useful companion for readers who want the source material, but it is an inspiration rather than a blueprint. The series’ central pairing is Francesca and Michaela, so do not assume the novel’s central romance maps directly onto the adaptation.
