Using the most widely cited figures, Disney’s reported worldwide total for James Cameron’s film is about 1.36 times the nominal worldwide total Guinness World Records gives for the 1977 Star Wars, and well under half of that film’s inflation-adjusted worldwide total. The headline’s “triples” claim does not hold on a matched worldwide basis, and the phrase “most influential” is an editorial judgment that box-office numbers cannot settle.
Which film is the likely comparison?
The most plausible referent for “the most influential sci-fi hit ever made” is the 1977 film Star Wars, later retitled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Guinness World Records identifies it as the record holder for inflation-adjusted worldwide science-fiction box office, which is the most common basis for claiming a sci-fi box-office crown. “Influential” itself, however, is a judgment about lasting impact on filmmaking, merchandising and the genre. No independent ranking or measurement establishes it, and this article does not treat gross as a proxy for influence.
The figures and where they come from
Every number below is attributed to its publisher and date. Several are company or industry-estimate figures, and they measure different things, so they should not be combined.

The Fire and Ash total is a January 2026 figure. Grosses continue to move after a report date, so this article does not describe the film’s current earnings. The Star Wars figures are lifetime totals with a reissue included, and the Guinness page does not report a like-for-like inflation adjustment for the Fire and Ash number.

Why the tripling claim fails
To triple Star Wars’ $798 million nominal worldwide total, Fire and Ash would need roughly $2.39 billion. Disney’s January 2026 report put it at $1.083 billion, which is about 1.36 times the Star Wars figure. The gap is a matter of arithmetic, not of rounding.
Comparing against the inflation-adjusted Star Wars total makes the gap larger. At $2,651,144,593, the adjusted Star Wars figure is more than twice the reported Fire and Ash total, and the Fire and Ash total is about 41 percent of it. The two bases cannot be placed side by side as if they were equivalent, but no version of the comparison produces a tripling.

Three accounting choices that change the answer
Box-office comparisons often mix measures that look similar. Three distinctions matter here.
Nominal versus inflation-adjusted dollars
Nominal figures report the money as it was received. Inflation-adjusted figures restate older receipts in today’s purchasing power, which makes a 1977 film look much larger. Guinness’s adjusted total is the figure behind its sci-fi record claim. Any article that compares a 2026 nominal total with a 1977 adjusted total is comparing unlike numbers.

Worldwide versus domestic
The Numbers lists an inflation-adjusted domestic figure for Fire and Ash of $404,340,010. It is explicitly a domestic number and cannot be set against a worldwide total. Disney’s split of $306 million domestic and $777.1 million international shows how much of the film’s earnings came from outside North America.
Lifetime totals versus a specific period
The Star Wars $798 million includes the 1997 reissue, so it is a lifetime figure across more than one release. Fire and Ash’s $1.083 billion is a total reported at a single point in its run. A fair comparison would state both periods, which the headline does not do.

What the Fire and Ash figures do establish
The film’s opening and format data are better documented than its lifetime total, and they show a release built around premium screens.
- Worldwide opening: Disney’s opening announcement put it at $347.1 million. AP reported about $345 million from studio estimates, so the two figures differ slightly and should be attributed separately.
- Premium formats: Disney reported that premium formats accounted for 66 percent of domestic opening-weekend box office, and 3D showtimes for 56 percent.
- IMAX: IMAX Corporation said the format earned $43.6 million globally, or 12.6 percent of the film’s worldwide debut, from less than 1 percent of total screens. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said in the same statement: “As James Cameron continues to break new ground with Avatar, the indelible connection between Avatar and IMAX endures, with IMAX delivering an outsized share of the box office across virtually every market worldwide.” This is a company statement promoting its own format, not an independent measure of the film.
Against a $400 million production budget, these figures explain why the film’s receipts are large, but they do not reveal whether it will outgrow Star Wars’ totals.

Box office is not a measure of influence
A film can gross more and still have less impact on the art form, the industry or later films. Influence is usually argued through evidence such as technical innovation, imitation, critical reassessment, and sustained cultural reference. Gross captures only the money spent in theaters and, for reissues, the money spent again. An article that calls Star Wars the “most influential” film has made an argument that the box-office record supports only in part. A reader who wants to test that claim needs to define influence first.
What would make the headline accurate
- Fire and Ash would need about $2.39 billion in nominal worldwide receipts to triple the $798 million Star Wars figure, a level the January 2026 report did not reach.
- A matched comparison would have to use the same geography, the same adjustment method and the same reporting window for both films, which the available sources do not provide.
- The word “influential” would need a defined standard. Without one, the headline can only be read as a box-office comparison, and on the figures above that comparison does not support tripling.
Until those conditions are met, the claim should be read as a headline to test, not as a verified fact.
