And Just Like That… ended on August 14, 2025, with Carrie Bradshaw choosing a life she can shape for herself. The finale offers a clear endpoint for Carrie, but not the shared, sustained farewell many viewers associate with Sex and the City. That gap—along with the sequel’s jarring comic turns and unresolved character threads—makes “betrayal” a defensible criticism of the goodbye’s form, though not the only way to read its meaning.
What happens at the end of And Just Like That…?
The sequel concludes after three seasons with a two-part finale, ending in the episode “Party of One.” Carrie revises the conclusion of the novel she has been writing throughout the season. Its final thought is that “the woman realized she was not alone, she was on her own.” TheWrap’s interview with showrunner Michael Patrick King and TV Guide’s finale review report the line.
The ending leaves Carrie single and at ease with the possibility that a new romantic partner may never appear. It gives her a private resolution, centered on her home, writing, and relationships, rather than a last-minute romantic rescue. The episode’s final gesture is therefore both a conclusion to Carrie’s story and a statement about the kind of ending she no longer needs.
Why do some viewers and critics call the finale a betrayal?
The strongest case is less that the finale contradicts every part of the franchise than that it withholds the kind of ensemble farewell that helped define it. Sex and the City ran from 1998 to 2004 as a story of New York friends, their conversations, dating, and Carrie’s writing, as the Associated Press reported. The sequel’s finale makes Carrie’s private realization its center, but does not offer the traditional closing scene of the friends gathered around a restaurant table, talking through life and love. Variety’s review notes both that absence and that some characters’ futures remain unsettled.

The friendship is present, but the farewell is not collective
That distinction matters. The finale does not say the friendships have ended; it simply does not dramatize them in the extended, shared scene some viewers wanted. The Los Angeles Times’ discussion argues for more group scenes in which the women could unpack their lives. Without that communal pause, the series’ goodbye can feel abrupt even when the characters’ bonds are meant to endure.
The comedy can interrupt the emotional register
Critics also objected to the finale’s tonal shifts. Variety describes an overflowing-toilet sequence and calls the goodbye strange and abrupt; the Los Angeles Times critic questioned the Thanksgiving scenario. TV Guide similarly faulted the series for not settling into a consistent tone. These are critical judgments, not evidence that every viewer reacted the same way, but they explain why the episode’s grotesque or offbeat comedy could feel at odds with a farewell expected to carry emotional weight.

Some arcs remain open
Variety points out that Miranda’s prospective grandchild is still unborn and that other characters’ futures remain open. An open ending can suit a continuing life, but it may feel incomplete when viewers are learning at the same time that there will be no next season. The result gives Carrie a definite last word while leaving parts of the ensemble’s story without a comparable endpoint.
The ending may not feel earned to every viewer
TV Guide argues that Carrie’s self-sufficiency lacks force because the revival did not adequately carry forward parts of her history. The Los Angeles Times discussion criticizes forced storylines and the sidelining of friendship and grief. Those readings challenge not the value of Carrie’s independence, but whether the series built enough continuity and emotional groundwork to make that independence land as a satisfying culmination.

What is the case that the finale fits the franchise?
King framed Carrie’s solitude as an evolution of the original series’ self-relationship theme. In the 2004 finale, Carrie speaks about the importance of her relationship with herself while Mr. Big calls. This time, the story does not turn that idea into a prelude to a romance. King told TheWrap, “I’m OK if maybe no one else is coming,” describing Carrie’s acceptance that her life need not wait for a partner.
That gives the ending a coherent counterargument to the betrayal charge: Carrie’s self-sufficiency is not a rejection of love or friendship but a refusal to make romantic arrival the measure of a complete life. Variety’s reviewer, despite calling the finale bizarre and abrupt, found the solo-life conclusion more internally consistent than the original’s return to Big. The ending can therefore feel thematically right for Carrie even if its ensemble structure disappoints.

The writers also defended the choice not to assemble the trio for one final scene. Julie Rottenberg said the ending felt like “the most honest way to end,” arguing that the friendship remains even when the women are physically apart. Elisa Zuritsky called Carrie’s closing position “a beautiful punctuation mark to a life well lived.” These statements explain the creators’ intention; they do not settle whether the finale makes that continuing friendship vivid enough on screen. TVLine’s interview with the writers discusses their defense and audience response.

The production context helps explain the uneven sense of closure. King told TheWrap he decided to end the series while writing the final episode, then spoke with Sarah Jessica Parker and HBO Max leadership. TheWrap reports that two additional episodes were ordered to shape a conclusion. TVLine reports the writers said they did not know it was the final season until after writing the rest of it.

The ending was announced close to the finale’s release, which surprised viewers. King said the late decision was intentional, but the timing can still be felt in a season that had not been written from the outset as a final chapter. A last episode may give its lead character a closing thought without making every preceding storyline feel like part of a planned farewell.
Did the finale betray Sex and the City?
It depends on what “betray” means. If the standard is a final, extended celebration of the women’s friendship and a settled endpoint for the ensemble, the finale falls short: Carrie receives the clearest closure, while the group farewell and several character resolutions are absent. If the standard is whether Carrie reaches a conclusion consistent with the franchise’s interest in self-knowledge, the ending has a strong defense. She can value her friends and still be complete on her own.
The fairest verdict is that the finale is more convincing as Carrie’s personal ending than as a farewell to the whole franchise. Its central idea follows through on a theme present in the original, but its abruptness, tonal oddities, and limited ensemble closure make that idea carry more of the goodbye than some viewers wanted.
What is known about audience reaction?
Contemporary coverage documents criticism and creator responses, but it does not establish a measurable audience consensus or a ratings collapse. TheWrap reported on August 14, 2025, that HBO Max had not shared Season 3 viewership data. The available evidence supports describing disagreement over the finale, not claiming that viewers as a whole rejected it.
