As Scroll reproduced it in December 2021, the line reads: “all the great movements for social justice in our society have strongly emphasised a love ethic.” By “love ethic,” hooks means love enacted as a practice of care, commitment and accountability, one that she argues can challenge domination. The claim about history is her interpretation, and it is best read as an argument rather than a measured finding.
Where the sentence appears
Scroll’s article of 17 December 2021, labelled “From All About Love,” reproduces the passage in full. The sentence follows hooks’s account of audiences, especially young listeners, becoming agitated when she speaks about love’s role in social justice. The lines that come after it say that young listeners remain reluctant to embrace love as something transformative. You can read the excerpt at Scroll’s article on bell hooks’s love ethic.
The Center for Action and Contemplation’s reflection on the book gives pages 87–88, 94, 98 and 101 for the passages it reproduces, and it is the most convenient place to check page references (Center for Action and Contemplation, “A Love Ethic” (2020)).
The title and the book differ in wording. The version most readers have seen takes the sentence as “All the great social justice movements have emphasised a love ethic,” while the book text, as reproduced by Scroll, reads “all the great movements for social justice.” When you quote, use the book’s wording and say that it comes from All About Love.

What hooks means by a love ethic
For hooks, love is something people do, not only something they feel. The three threads below show how she builds that idea across her interviews and her book.
Love as something enacted
In a 2000 interview with Thich Nhat Hanh, first published in the Shambhala Sun and republished by Plum Village, hooks describes her social and cultural criticism as “love in action.” She explains that she began to connect love with ending domination, including racism, sexism, homophobia and classism. In the same conversation she recounts her view that the civil-rights and women’s movements began with a love ethic, and that later leaders shifted attention toward power. The dimensions of love
In All About Love, as excerpted by the Center for Action and Contemplation, hooks names six dimensions of love:
- care
- commitment
- trust
- responsibility
- respect
- knowledge
In a 1999 archival interview, hooks describes love as a combination of commitment, responsibility, respect, trust and openness. She also explains why care alone does not guarantee honesty or trust. The interview is held by the American Archive of Public Broadcasting (“Basic Black; 3113; Conversation with bell hooks”). These lists are conceptual frameworks, not clinical or scientific scales, and the two versions do not match exactly. Treat them as hooks’s working vocabulary rather than fixed definitions.

Love against domination
The first episode of PBS’s documentary Becoming bell hooks places her argument in the context of her wider work. It shows hooks tying love to the ending of domination, and it presents her as not seeing this as a departure from radical politics. It also notes that some readers misunderstood the political claim. The practical point is that love in this sense is compatible with sharp criticism of oppression. It is a demand for accountable relationships, not a retreat from confrontation.

Why the “all” needs qualifying
The sentence is a generalisation that hooks offers as her reading of history. It is not presented as a count of movements or as the result of a systematic study, and the sources cited here do not supply one. Movements differ widely in their language and tactics, so the strongest way to engage with the claim is to test it against specific movements: look at their founding documents, speeches and internal disputes, and ask whether the ethic she describes is present.

Readers have been returning to All About Love. According to Circana sales data reported by the Associated Press in 2024, more than 170,000 copies were sold in 2023, compared with just over 27,000 in 2018. These figures measure readership, not whether hooks’s historical argument is correct. The AP piece also records scholars’ concern that readers sometimes encounter a selective, depoliticised version of her work, which is the same concern the PBS episode raises about misreadings of her politics (Associated Press, “A new generation of readers embraces bell hooks’ ‘All About Love’”).
