The 2020 adaptation of Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy centers on two intertwined stories: university student Lata Mehra’s choice among three suitors, and Maan Kapoor’s relationship with singer and courtesan Saeeda Bai. Their families connect them, while the novel’s 1951 setting brings questions of religion, class, politics and life after Partition into the background of their personal decisions.

How the novel’s families fit together

A Suitable Boy unfolds among four families in Brahmpur: the middle-class, Anglicized Mehras; the politically ascendant, Hindi-speaking Kapoors; the Bengali intellectual Chatterjis; and the Muslim Khans, a landowning family facing land reform. The story takes place in 1951, as newly independent India approaches its first general election. The family network is one way the novel ties private choices to broader social and political change. HarperCollins’ reading guide describes the four-family structure and its themes.

Lata and Maan are not strangers from separate plotlines: their siblings’ marriages make them relatives by marriage. Lata’s brother Arun is married to Pran Kapoor, Maan’s elder brother. That connection helps explain why the Mehra and Kapoor stories overlap.

The Mehra family and Lata’s marriage question

Lata Mehra and Mrs Rupa Mehra

Lata (Tanya Maniktala) is a 19-year-old university student who wants room for her studies, friendships and feelings. Her mother, Mrs Rupa Mehra (Mahira Kakkar), has arranged the marriage of Lata’s elder sister Savita and now sets about finding a suitable husband for Lata. Their disagreement—between a mother’s matchmaking and a daughter’s wish to choose for herself—is the series’ central marriage plot.

A Suitable Boy: A Novel (Modern Classics)
  • Author: Seth, Vikram.
  • Publisher: Harper Perennial Modern Classics
  • Pages: 1488
  • Publication Date: 2005-10-04
  • Edition: Reissue

Maniktala described her character this way: “Lata’s beauty lies in her simplicity; I would say that she is very relatable, very grounded and humble.” The comment appeared in the Royal Television Society’s character guide.

Savita and Arun

Savita is Lata’s elder sister. Her conventional marriage gives Rupa a recent example of the path she hopes Lata will follow. Arun, Lata’s brother, is married to Pran Kapoor, creating the family link to Maan.

Lata’s three suitors: three different possible futures

The suitors are not interchangeable candidates in a simple contest. Each brings a different temperament, family setting and prospect for Lata. The publisher’s guide frames them as distinct aspects of love and different possibilities for her future.

Suitor Connection to Lata What he brings to the story
Kabir Durrani (Danesh Razvi) Lata’s university classmate; they meet in a bookshop. A star cricket player whose relationship with Lata carries serious religious repercussions. Scroll describes him as charming but privately sorrowful.
Amit Chatterji (Mikhail Sen) A poet in the Bengali Chatterji family; he and Lata connect at a family party. He has left a legal career to write. His hesitation to act leaves room for other suitors to enter Lata’s life.
Haresh Khanna (Namit Das) A footwear-industry aspirant who seeks Lata’s hand. He studied shoe manufacture in England and returns with career ambitions. His direct manner and clothing choices draw skepticism from Lata’s family.

The comparisons in this guide reflect the novel’s and series’ character framing, not a verdict on which match is best. The choice tests how Lata weighs attraction, family expectation and the life she wants.

The Kapoors and Maan’s parallel story

Maan Kapoor and Mahesh Kapoor

Maan (Ishaan Khatter), younger son of politician Mahesh Kapoor (Ram Kapoor), is the novel’s other major narrative center. Charming and impulsive, he becomes involved with Saeeda Bai, a relationship that challenges convention and puts pressure on his father’s political life. Maan’s storyline widens the focus beyond Lata’s marriage question.

Khatter characterized Maan as someone who “doesn’t care much for convention or the correct way of doing things,” adding that he is “understanding, very empathic and sees a lot of merit in enjoying life to the full.” The remarks are from the Royal Television Society’s 2020 character article.

Pran and Veena Kapoor

Pran, Maan’s elder brother, is married to Arun Mehra and is therefore Lata’s brother-in-law. Maan’s sister Veena is married to Kedarnath. After moving from Lahore to Brahmpur following Partition, Veena and her family face changed circumstances.

Saeeda Bai and the Khan family

Saeeda Bai and Maan

Saeeda Bai (Tabu) is a singer and courtesan whose relationship with Maan becomes emotionally important to both of them and politically consequential for his father. Her role is more than a complication in Maan’s life: she stands at the meeting point of personal desire and a society with strict expectations about status and respectability.

Firoz, Imtiaz and the Nawab Sahib

Firoz Khan (Shubham Saraf), son of the Nawab Sahib of Baitar, is Maan’s close friend. He and his brother Imtiaz, a doctor, are educated and cultivated; they try to rein in Maan. Their father, the learned Nawab Sahib, is a friend of Mahesh Kapoor and represents an older landed order unsettled by political change and land reform. Abida, the Nawab’s sister-in-law, is politically active and has moved beyond the traditional women’s quarters.

Friends and other figures beyond the central pair

The story also includes people whose lives illuminate its wider social world. Malati, Lata’s friend and a would-be doctor, belongs to her university and social circle. Rasheed is connected to Maan’s experience in a village. Jagat Ram, an untouchable shoemaker named in the publisher’s guide, brings caste and social change into view. These figures point toward the novel’s breadth without exhausting its cast; no single short guide can stand in for every character and subplot.

What the six-part series foregrounds

The production company describes Mira Nair’s 2020 adaptation as six 60-minute episodes written by Andrew Davies, with credits to BBC, Netflix and Acorn TV. Lookout Point’s production page lists the format and credits. Netflix India also catalogs it as a six-episode limited series and provides episode summaries; that regional listing does not establish availability elsewhere, and streaming catalogs can change.

The official series framing foregrounds Rupa’s search for a husband for Lata and Maan’s affair with Saeeda Bai. Its six-episode form necessarily presents a narrower route through a novel that ranges across four families and political, religious, economic and social strands. That is a difference in scope and format, not a reason to assume that any particular character or subplot is absent from the adaptation.

If you want the full family network

The novel offers room for the connections and social strands that a short character guide can only introduce. HarperCollins’ reading guide identifies the edition A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, ISBN 9780060786526. Read it for the wider interwoven story rather than as a checklist of characters appearing in the series.
