Abide With Me was omitted from the Indian Army’s published programme for the 29 January 2022 Beating Retreat ceremony. Contemporary reporting attributed the decision to a government preference for more Indian-origin music during the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the commemoration of India’s 75th year of independence. The reported replacement was Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon. This explains the 2022 decision; the available reporting does not establish the hymn’s status in later ceremonies.

Why was the hymn omitted in 2022?

PTI reported that unnamed government sources linked the change to the aim of including more Indian-origin tunes as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. The explanation was attributed to those sources, not to a named official speaking on the record. The reported replacement, Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon, was written by Kavi Pradeep to commemorate Indian soldiers who died in the 1962 war with China. The Times of India’s PTI report described the stated rationale and the replacement.

The decision became contentious because the hymn had a long place in the ceremony and was associated in public reporting with Mahatma Gandhi. Critics saw its removal as a break with that tradition; supporters of the change emphasized the inclusion of Indian-origin music. Those are competing interpretations of the change, rather than proof of a single definitive political motive. India Today’s coverage reported the controversy and the government-source explanation.

What changed, and when?

The 2022 omission was not the hymn’s first recent absence. The Indian Express reported that it was dropped in 2020, restored the following year, and excluded again in 2022. Its report said the official tune list for the 2022 ceremony contained 26 items and did not include Abide With Me. The Times of India reported that the hymn had been part of Beating Retreat since 1950.

Year What contemporary reporting says
1950 The Times of India reported that the hymn became part of the Beating Retreat ceremony. This is a figure reported by the newspaper, not a claim attributed here to an official programme document.
2020 The Indian Express reported that the hymn was dropped.
2021 The Indian Express reported that it was restored.
2022 The Indian Army’s published programme omitted it; the Indian Express reported a 26-item tune list. PTI reported the replacement as Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon.

These accounts document the 2022 programme decision and the preceding sequence, not what happened in later years. The 2022 omission should therefore not be described as the hymn’s current status without a later programme to confirm it. The Indian Express’s report on the 2020–2022 sequence covers the changes.

Why is ‘Abide With Me’ associated with Gandhi?

Contemporary accounts commonly describe Abide With Me as Gandhi’s favourite hymn. That shorthand should not be taken as evidence of a documented ranking of his musical preferences. A more specific connection is that the Sabarmati Ashram bhajanavali, assembled under Gandhi’s watch, included both Abide With Me and Lead, Kindly Light, according to an Indian Express explainer.

Who wrote the hymn, and what is its melody?

Reports credit Henry Francis Lyte, a Scottish Anglican poet and hymn writer, with writing Abide With Me in 1847. It is commonly sung to Eventide, a tune by William Henry Monk. The Indian Express explainer discusses the hymn’s authorship, melody and place in the Sabarmati Ashram bhajanavali. Read the explainer.
