When people ask who coined “Murder, She Wrote,” they almost always mean the title of the CBS mystery series that ran from September 30, 1984 to May 19, 1996. Its wording is reported to be a play on an earlier title, Murder, She Said, but the sources available do not identify who chose the final words. No individual can be credited with coining the phrase on the evidence that exists.

Where the wording comes from

The most commonly cited explanation is that the series title echoes Murder, She Said, a 1961 film adapted from Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple novel 4:50 from Paddington. In that title, “said” evokes Miss Marple reporting a crime. The television title swaps “said” for “wrote,” which suits the show’s lead character, Jessica Fletcher, a mystery novelist who also solves real crimes.

That reading is an interpretation of the wordplay. The explanation appears in the Wikipedia article on the series, and the surviving published accounts do not include a statement from the title’s creator or a primary record of the final title decision.

What is established about the title

  • The series title is a reported play on Murder, She Said.
  • The series centered on Jessica Fletcher, a mystery author and amateur sleuth played by Angela Lansbury.
  • The show’s original run was 12 seasons and 264 episodes, from September 30, 1984 to May 19, 1996, according to the Wikipedia article on the series.

What is not established

The reviewed sources do not say who first put the words “Murder, She Wrote” together. They also do not say whether the wording came from a network executive, a producer, a writer, or a studio team, or whether it was discussed as wordplay at the time. Any single name offered as the coiner would go beyond the evidence.

How the series concept developed

The accounts of the show’s development credit CBS drama-programming executive Carla Singer with the original idea. Her story, as excerpted in Lily E. Hirsch’s book and reported by the Kelley House Museum, describes a concept built around older women on television. It does not describe the title’s origin.

A question from her mother

According to Singer’s account, her mother asked her, “But what about women my age?” That question helped focus Singer’s interest in creating more substantial television roles for women, including older women.

The Miss Marple idea

Singer first considered building a series around Miss Marple. The Christie estate declined, which left the producers without the character they had initially wanted.

Link and Levinson’s original mystery

Singer then asked William Link and Richard Levinson to develop an original mystery with an older woman as the lead. The result was the Jessica Fletcher character, a mystery writer who becomes involved in real investigations.

Why the title fits the show

Writer-producer Tom Sawyer, quoted in Zac Bissonnette’s Salon feature published July 30, 2022, described the series as character-driven rather than a conventional whodunit:

“There was a murder and you got your closure at the end but you almost didn’t care who did it because of the fascinating characters — a drama where a murder happens to take place.”

That description helps explain why a title built on Fletcher’s identity as a writer would make sense. It does not, however, identify who chose the words.
